Award Winner

1850s Victorian Rice Shell Basket

This basket was made in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, in the 1850s by a woman who immigrated from England. It took 4 years to complete. The silk used in the flower wrapping was purchased at Cheney Silk Mills, Manchester, CT. The silk cocoons were shipped from China to the mills. The yellow in the center of the flowers is also silk. The rice shells used in the peace were from Barbados.

Isn't this bird magnificent? Of course it is! It has the word "magnificent" in its name!

The Magnificent Frigatebird is a large seabird with angular wings and a deeply forked tail. As observed in this photo, breeding males appear all black except for their bright red throat pouch. Though it is certainly eye-catching, it is not always visible. When in the presence of females, the male will inflate its red throat pouch and drum on it as a mating display. This display is accompanied by the males clacking their bills, as well.
