Dear MASD families,

Last week brought major flooding to our school district, and many families have been affected by this devastating event. As a result, there may be some of you who do not typically need assistance but who find yourselves in need of some help at this time. There is help available! Below you will find some resources that you may find beneficial:

Casselman Valley Helpers - food pantry serving our community. While you may not meet regular income guidelines for this resource, please explain to them your circumstances and see what they can provide. The pantry is open on Friday mornings from 9am-10am and is located in the basement of the Zion Lutheran Church (door is in the alley). The address is 355 Center St. Meyersdale, PA.

Somerset County Mobile Food Bank - again, you may call them to determine extenuating circumstances for food distribution. The phone number is 814-443-6574, ext. 2. The food bank is scheduled to be in Meyersdale, at the Church of the Brethren parking lot. Their regular distribution for the month just occurred, and typically happens on the third Tuesday of the month at 1:45 pm. For more information, please visit their website at https://scmfb.org/events/category/food-distribution/.

Somerset County Assistance office - you must meet income guidelines for their regular services, but the case managers at the assistance office may be able to guide you toward other available resources if you contact them. The phone number is 814-443-3681.

Salvation Army - The phone number to the Somerset office is 814-445-9232 and they may be able to help with food, clothing, or other needed resources.
Red Cross - Many of you who were most directly affected have already met with workers from the Red Cross. You can utilize their website if you have needs or questions. www.redcross.org.

In addition, the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren is committed to helping families who were directly impacted by the flooding. Please reach out to Pastor Eric Shaulis at 814-442-7968.

If you have any questions or concerns, or you are in need of other resources, please contact Bree Yoder, our School Social Worker, at 814-442-2208 (call or text) or [email protected].

A Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) for victims of last week’s flooding in Somerset County will be held later this week in Meyersdale.

County officials are working in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to organize and coordinate the resource event. Representatives from more than a dozen state, local, county and regional agencies will allow residents to access disaster related relief services and information to aide in the recovery process following the flood.

The resource center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday 5/22 through Saturday 5/24 in the upstairs of the Meyersdale Volunteer Fire Department, 202 Main St, Meyersdale, PA 15552.

Anyone who repairs damage is encouraged to record their efforts with photographs, documents, and receipts.

Have you experienced damage to your home from Flooding on May 13th?
Beginning Wednesday morning, May 14th, damage assessment teams from the county, municipalities, and the Red Cross will begin to determine the amount of damage to homes, properties, businesses, and infrastructure throughout the county as a result of the flooding that began on Tuesday, May 13.

Any residents who have experienced damage to their homes may request a disaster assessment. This may be done by completing a Disaster Intake Form on the Somerset County website at https://www.co.somerset.pa.us/disasterrecovery/disasterrecovery.asp or they may call the Emergency Management office at 814-445-1515. A damage assessment team will then be in touch to make arrangements to visit your property.

We would like to express our deepest sympathies to Virginia’s friends and family

Virginia Tressler Hankins, 43, of Frostburg, Maryland, passed away Monday, March 31, 2025. She was born on December 19, 1981, in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania to the late Conrad Franklin Tressler and Carolyn Jean Shriver Tressler.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Conrad Tressler.

Virginia was a deeply compassionate and selfless woman, known for her generous spirit and love for others. A Baptized member of Crossroads Church in Oakland, Maryland, she lived a life rooted in faith and service. She graduated from Meyersdale High School and went on to earn her associate’s degree in business from the University of Phoenix Technical School. Her passion for cooking led her to attend two years of culinary school at Somerset Vo-Tech, where she sharpened her skills into what many called stellar. Virginia was also a dedicated member of the Finzel Fire Department and served as an EMT, always putting the needs of others first. She had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting deer and fishing in any body of water she could find - ponds, rivers, or lakes. Known as a friend to the friendless, Virginia had a way of connecting with everyone she met. No matter what little she had, she was always willing to give, even if it was just a dollar. But more than anything, she loved watching her children, Mikayla, Shelby, and Anthony, play sports, finding joy and pride in their happiness.

She is survived by her loving husband, Anthony Lee Hankins; daughters, Mikayla Wilt and Shelby Hankins; son, Anthony Lee Hankins, Jr; sisters, Connie Warnick, Carol Ann Hutzell (Brandon), and Shirley Owens; brothers, Orville Crowe and Jake Tressler; sisters-in-law, Patricia Velez (Carlos), Julia Hudson (Scott), and Jeanie Cool (Elmer); brothers-in-law, C.J. Bernard (Barilyn Baran) and Robert Combs (Betsy); grandchildren, Hill Lee Hankins, Kody Glenn Fazenbaker, and Estrella Gale Assuncion Alicea; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and special friends, Jimmy and Joy Deal and Lori Hoshard.

The funeral will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at County Line Christian Church, 12711 Chatham Road, Axton, Virginia 24054, with Pastor Brandon Hutzell officiating. Interment will follow at County Line Christian Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the permanent closing of Mason Dixon Speedway. This track has been more than just a place to race—it’s been a home for so many of us, filled with memories, friendships, and a shared love for the sport.

To all of our drivers, teams, fans, and supporters over the years, we can’t thank you enough. Your passion and dedication kept this place alive, and we are forever grateful for every lap, every cheer, and every moment spent together at the track.

As we say goodbye, we also take a moment to remember Joe, who was such an important part of our racing family. His love for the sport and his presence at the track will never be forgotten.

Though the engines will go quiet, the memories of Mason Dixon Speedway will always live on. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey.
