Alabama Hunter Education Classes Prepare New Hunters for the Upcoming Season
With hunting season approaching, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) encourages new hunters to complete their hunter education requirement early. Demand for courses increases prior to and during hunting season, so participants interested in attending an in-person class should register as soon as possible.
Alabama offers two ways to earn hunter education certification: a traditional in-person class or an approved online course. Either option satisfies Alabama’s hunter education requirement.
Free in-person classes are offered throughout the state and provide at least eight hours of instruction followed by a written examination. Courses cover firearm safety and handling, responsible hunting, wildlife laws, hunter ethics, wildlife management, archery, muzzleloading, first aid, survival and game care. Classes are taught by experienced ADCNR personnel and certified volunteer instructors and are open to participants ages 10 and older.
As part of an ongoing effort to make in-person instruction more accessible, ADCNR is working with Bass Pro Shops to establish annual hunter education classes at its locations in Leeds, Prattville and Spanish Fort. Additional courses are offered at community centers, shooting ranges, churches and other locations across Alabama. Class schedules are updated as new opportunities become available.
Students who need greater scheduling flexibility may complete one of Alabama’s approved online courses. Online instruction generally takes approximately eight hours, can be completed at the student’s own pace and covers the knowledge and skills necessary to be a safe, responsible hunter. A free online option is available, along with several fee-based courses.
Anyone born on or after August 1, 1977, must complete an approved hunter education program before purchasing an Alabama hunting license unless hunting under the state’s supervision required provision or otherwise exempt. Hunter education is available beginning at age 10, although a hunting license is not required until age 16 (exceptions include baiting privilege for deer/hog and reef endorsement).
Students who successfully complete either an approved online course or an in-person class receive a hunter education certification recognized by all 50 states and Canadian provinces where certification is required.
New graduates can also take advantage of PathPerks, a program developed by the International Hunter Education Association-USA and powered by Guidefitter. The program connects hunter education graduates with one year of exclusive savings on hunting gear from participating outdoor brands, along with gear reviews, expert guidance and an online community. PathPerks is designed to help reduce barriers for new hunters as they move from completing hunter education to preparing for their first experiences in the field. Upon completing the hunter education course, graduates will automatically receive an email with an opportunity to enroll in the program, completely free of charge.
