Educational series - #6 Flames!

Dried leaves and fire, sounds simple, right?

There are lots of methods used to set the carefully chosen cigar alight for your enjoyment. We want to give you some options to help make your decision of how to light up that great to***co and really enjoy yourself.

Matches- Tried and true method of setting light to anything. Decades of use behind this method prove its efficacy. Stick to the strike on box type over the strike anywhere type of wooden matches. The strike anywhere have other components that may give an off-putting aroma into that first light.

Cedar spills- Small strips of Spanish cedar(the same wood used in most cigar boxes and humidors). Often used as a elegant method of applying a soft flame to your cigar. Brings a bit of that humidor smell to your first few puffs. It does required a second method of lighting the cedar spill with another source of flame.

Soft flame- The ubiquitous BIC lighter is an example. Although many other accessories brands have created decadent and beautiful soft flame lights for cigar enjoyment. Prone to be tricky to light in windy and wet conditions. Also harder to touch up any cigar that may have a waiver in the burn line.

Torch - Single, double, triple, and quad jet torches have won the praises of many cigar afficianados because of their reliability, precision, and effective way of putting some smoke in the air(PSSITA!) very easy to correct a wavering burn line with precise flame. Will require some basic maintenance with refueling and purging. Worth noting that not all butane fuel is the same, stick with high quality fuel to avoid clogged jets for long term use of these torches.

Zippos- Not recommended for ci**rs. The Namptha fuel used in Zippo style lights can give a chemical aroma to the cigar and may make you think that the cigar is not as good as it really is. There are inserts for zippos that utilize a single or dual torch butane fuel that do work well with ci**rs it you just love that *Plink* of opening the cover on your Zippo!

As always, ask our expert to***conists all your questions when you stop by the shop!

Educational series - Part 5

Cigar cutters

Nearly every premium cigar is capped on the smoking end. A cutter removes that cap so you can smoke the cigar. As with all knives, you want your blades to be as sharp as possible for a clean cut.

1 - Straight cut
A straight cutter creates a smooth cut across the head of your cigar. It can have one or two blades and come with or without a backing. Ones without a back require more control, because if you cut off too much, your cigar can start to unravel. Straight cutters come in varying sizes, to accommodate wider ring gauges and differently shaped ci**rs.

2 - V cut
A V cutter creates a wedge shaped cut. Depending on how deep you cut, you can adjust the strength and intensity of your smoke. Many smokers like this for smaller gauges, since it increases the surface area for more flavor.

3 - Punch cut
A punch cutter has a circle blade that creates a small hole in the cap. These work best with standard shaped ci**rs, and typically do not require much force. The small hole creates a tight draw.

4 - No cutter
All you need to smoke a cigar is to remove the cap. You can use a fingernail to scratch that off, or your teeth to bite it. Obviously, this will not produce a clean cut, but when TSA confiscates your cutter, you make do!

As with most things involving premium ci**rs, your choice of cutter is up to your personal preference. Talk to our experienced to***conist if you have any questions!
