When I woke up a couple nights ago and read the sad news of Toby Keith’s passing I felt a twinge of emptiness. No, I didn’t know him personally, but his music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. His first chart topper, “I Shoulda Been a Cowboy,” played as an anthem for myself and many other high school aged young men. After that, the hits just kept coming. He was unapologetic in what he sang and how he lived. He created laughs, brought tears, and filled Americans with pride and a sense of hope through the tragic times surrounding 9/11.
Thank you Mr. Keith for enriching the lives of a generation and beyond. Your time here entertaining millions of fans has come to a close. Your talent and heart are required elsewhere for a new audience. Others will follow in time, but not before you get that tour bus of Willie’s, The Honeysuckle Rose, ready to travel. So roll some fat ones and have them on hand. When the time is right you’ll be able to “Smoke W**d With Willie Again” without worrying about the effects.
With Red Solo Cups held high, here’s to you Toby Keith! You’re not just a singer, you’re our…Friend. Thank you for being our friend.
Rest well dear friend.
