This topic is pretty personal for me. When my son struggled with feeding challenges, we tried a lot of different things. I was told at first he did have a tongue tie/lip tie that was impacting his feeding and then I was told that he did not. It was all very confusing during a time where I was sleep deprived and not really sure how to move forward. I just dreaded each feeding knowing it would be very dramatic, leading to a lot of spit up and discomfort for both of us.

I wish I had created this infographic before my first kid, but it’s never to late and research is updating constantly. A lot of the research in this infographic had similar results across a lot of studies. I’ve heard a lot of clinical opinions that people are doing this too often or that it is not done enough. If this is confusing as clinicians, imagine how confusing it is for caregivers.

The impact of knowing the signs of potential tongue or lip tie is huge for families that are struggling with breastfeeding. The earlier to identify it, the better for everyone involved. There is also a lot of information out in the public about doing body work pre/post ties, personally this was somewhat helpful for us but it wasn’t until the actual tongue release that I noticed any differences. I have not looked into any studies about this yet but plan to in the future.

I hope you can use this information to share with your families why you may be requesting to get an assessment for a tongue/lip to, or to share with dentists or health professionals why this may be a recommendation you have as an occupational therapist.

I’m curious what your experience has been with infants pre or post tongue tie and if you found this infographic helpful.

Trying to navigate healthcare information in today's world is so challenging because there is so much to sort through AND we have to make sure it is legitimate and not being shared to promote a product or for someone else's benefit.

Infographics are one solution to this problem. Being able to share clearly, easily, and evidence-based information this way, has been our mission at OT Graphically.

What are other ways you can think of that would help solve this problem of information overload to help others learn accurate health care solutions?

These days it can be really hard for clinicians to navigate through all the information coming at them. Disseminating research is becoming more and more of a need to help capture people's attention and help them utilize the information quickly. If you are a researcher and are looking to support the dissemination process yourself, check out our blog post on a few ways to help you brainstorm and get started!

One trick to staying up-to-date is following the authors who are researching your topic area of interest on X. They often post as soon as something is published, so you won't miss any time getting the information you need.

I've created, and will continue to update this OT Researcher Database to help both researchers get the word out and OTs to find their work.

If you are a researcher, and would like you information added DM me your Name and where you'd like people to follow your work!

We make sure that what we do in OT Graphically has evidence behind it.

Here is the support that what we are doing is helping others be able to stay up to date. I have seen this from experience, received feedback from others, and have the evidence to support it. When thinking about the 3 parts of EBP, infographics check all the boxes.

Many stakeholders, both professional and community members, have little time to read the vast amount of published literature in their field, specialty or area of interest. A well-designed infographic overcomes both these challenges.” (Eljiz et al., 2020, p.4)

This letter was written from a place of frustration when navigating providing services for occupational therapy and getting denied on what I knew was appropriate, evidence-based, and medically necessary.

I think the hardest part about it is that our value is measured by time and not by quality of the care or the therapeutic relationship. I can't always get that done in 8-12 visits, 3 weeks, or on a monthly basis. Every single person is different and therefore ever case should be considered that way.

I don't want to sugar coat it, it can be really hard to deal with insurance issues on a daily basis and is not a part of what we probably saw ourselves doing when we signed up to become an OT student.

I've never sent this letter but would love one day to present it in-person to insurance companies to help them understand how much of a difficulty this can be on care.

For those of you in the midst of this right now, know that you are not alone!

Now more than ever the amount of scientific information coming out is extremely rapid and the time to stay up-to-date is closing.

Employees that are able to know what research is out there will be able to feel more confident in their work.

They will be able to provide quality care and see better outcomes. All of this can be a contributing factor in preventing burnout.

Consider implementing some of these practices and providing these tools and resources at your workplace to support the success of employees and your clients at the same time.

New infographic alert 🚨 - Effects of Occupational Therapy on Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients

This systematic review combined a large number of occupational therapy interventions for breast cancer patients and identified the outcome areas that were most impacted by each intervention.

Thank you to the authors for doing this very important research so we can more easily implement these interventions into our care.

Do you use any of these interventions? Have you had similar results?
