Today’s Unlock 🔓: Brick House The Commodore Maduro

🧱 The brand is named after a real building. Julius Caeser Newman was born in 1875 in the only brick house in his village in Austria-Hungary — the family lived upstairs and ran the village tavern downstairs. He left, came to America, started rolling ci**rs, and in 1937 named a brand after the house he grew up in.

🇨🇺 It was a Cuban puro back then. The brand faded away
over the decades, until his grandsons revived it in 2009 with Nicaraguan to***co — and Cigar Aficionado named it the best bargain cigar of that year.

📈 How much of a workhorse? One size alone, the Mighty Mighty, is over a million ci**rs this year.

🆕 The Commodore is brand new for 2026 — the Mighty Mighty’s big brother, and the thickest Brick House ever made. Maduro only.

Honest take: Drew Newman called this “a three-hour cigar journey.” Hear that number before you buy one. People grab a 70 ring because it looks impressive, light it with 45 minutes to spare, and relight it an hour later wondering why it turned bitter. Maduro does not forgive a relight. Buy this for the Saturday where nobody’s expecting you anywhere.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente King

🅃 The T stands for tubo. King T is the tube version.

🛡️ But that tube isn’t there to look expensive. Of every wrapper Fuente uses, the Connecticut Shade on this one is the most fragile they make. Grown under cloth, never in direct sun — that’s what keeps it light and smooth, and it’s also what makes the leaf thin enough to crack if you look at it wrong. So they put their most delicate wrapper inside a metal tube. That’s not luxury packaging. That’s a cast.

🏰 And look what’s printed on it: Chateau de la Fuente itself. They put the farm on the armor.

don’t buy this one to cellar it. The tube tells you what the cigar is for — a golf bag, a jacket pocket, a glovebox, and it comes out the other side in one piece. Most ci**rs can’t leave the house without you worrying about them. This one can.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Aging Room Pura Cepa

🟡 Look at the cellophane. That yellow isn’t dirt and it isn’t damage — it’s five years. To***co is full of oils, and over time those oils migrate out of the leaf and into the cello. Clear → faint tint → this. When you see yellowed cello in a shop, that’s not old stock somebody’s dumping on you. That’s free aging somebody already did for you.

🏠 And it happened to a cigar from a brand literally called Aging Room. These have been sitting in my humidor for over five years.

📦 Small Batch release from Rafael Nodal, 2018 — he never published the varietals or the farms

🎯 Flavor notes: earth, wood, pepper → coffee, cocoa, underlying sweetness → spice building to a long finish

💪 Strength: Medium-full — with sneaky ni****ne. You won’t feel it smoking. You’ll feel it standing up.

Honest take: aging isn’t a guarantee. Time rounds the edges off a strong cigar, but it can also flatten one that didn’t have much to give. You don’t know which you’ve got until you light it. And I can’t go buy another one of these.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: AJ Fernandez New World Dorado

🟡 This cigar is named after dirt. Estelí soil is dark gray and ashy — that’s just what that region looks like. But on one of AJ’s farms, he noticed the ground had a gold tint coming off the surface. So he named the farm Dorado. Golden.

🌾 Then he took the first harvest that farm ever produced and built a regular-production cigar out of it. Not a test batch — a line in his most successful brand.

🌿 Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown — Dorado farm

🌿 Binder: Nicaraguan Criollo ‘98 — Dorado farm

🌿 Filler: Nicaraguan — mostly Dorado, plus Condega and one other Estelí farm

🏭 Factory: San Lotano — Ocotal, not Estelí
🇳🇮 Country: Nicaragua — a true Nicaraguan puro

🎯 Flavor notes: earth, natural to***co, pepper → wood, coffee, a berry/dried fruit note → baker’s spice and pepper returning

💪 Strength: Medium

the gold soil is a great story and it’s not why this tastes good. Dirt color doesn’t determine flavor — minerals do, water does, the farmer does. What actually matters is the part that sounds less cool: almost every leaf in this cigar came off one piece of land. Most ci**rs pull from four or five places to balance out. This one doesn’t. You’re tasting one farm.

And that’s what makes the AJ Fernandez New World Dorado today’s unlock. 🔓

The Unlock, Part 2 🔓: Fuente Fuente OpusX

I told you I’d never smoked one. Here’s what actually happened.

🔪 V-cut

💨 Smoke output is the thing. Every pull. And it’s not a tight draw — it’s a smooth draw putting out clouds like that. That’s what makes a cigar feel good in your hand.

🌶️ Pepper right off the bat. Not harsh, not aggressive — the kind of pepper you can actually taste.

🪵 Earth and cedar through the middle, with cinnamon and some other warm spice behind it.

💪 Full-bodied right off the rip. Can’t rush this one.

🔥 One honest note: it ran a little hot early. I’ve had it in the humidor over a month so that’s not it — I think it’s the vitola. Smaller ring gauge, more heat, faster.

So does it live up to thirty years of hype? I don’t have anything bad to say about it. And I’m pretty sure almost everyone who smokes one is going to like it — which in this hobby is rare, because this is a game of opinions.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Fuente Fuente OpusX

🙏 I own a cigar shop and I had never smoked one of these. Not once. OpusX is allocated so tightly that when you’re the guy running the store, you don’t keep them — you sell them.

Today’s a first, and it’s only happening because the_leaf_&_barrel_society mailed me a care package and asked for nothing in return. Thank you, brother.

🌱 In the early ‘90s the whole industry agreed you couldn’t grow quality wrapper to***co in the Dominican Republic — people had been trying and failing since the 1960s. Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr. planted 37 acres of Cuban seed in Bonao anyway and was told to his face it would fail. First leaves came off in 1992.

🏆 November 1995: the Fuente Fuente OpusX. The first Dominican puro to take over the world. He proved the entire industry wrong with one cigar.

🔒 Fuente doesn’t sell a single leaf from Chateau de la Fuente. If a cigar carries that wrapper, Fuente made it.

Honest take: nothing survives thirty years of hype intact. I’m not going to tell you it’s the greatest cigar ever made. I’m lighting it at the end of this one, and I’ll tell you what I actually taste in the next video. 🔜

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Raw Dog by Oscar Valladares

🚫 There’s no wrapper on this cigar. None. The wrapper is the most expensive leaf in any cigar, it has to be flawless, and it’s the one everybody judges a cigar by. Oscar Valladares took it off entirely.

✂️ No wrapper means no cap — nothing to cut. You just light it.

🧹 The binder is trimmed short at the foot so the filler extends past it. That’s a brushed foot.

✍️ The band isn’t even printed. It’s a strip of cardboard with the name written on in marker, by hand. The packaging budget on this was one Sharpie.

🌿 Wrapper: none

🌿 Binder: Honduran — Copán

🌿 Filler: Honduran — Jamastrán & Copán

🏭 Factory: Oscar Valladares To***co & Co. — Danlí

🇭🇳 Country: Honduras — a true Honduran puro

🎯 Flavor notes: black pepper and raw earthy to***co → espresso, nutmeg, dark chocolate, cedar → brown sugar, short spicy finish

💪 Strength: Medium to medium-full

Every leaf in here is a leaf that was never meant to be seen.

Honest take: every cigar you’ve ever smoked, you tasted the wrapper first. Take it away and you find out how much of what you love was the wrapper and how much was always the guts underneath. This isn’t the best cigar on my shelf — but it’ll teach you more about to***co than a lot of ci**rs that cost three times as much.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Tabak Especial Café con Leche

☕ Dark at the top, light through the middle, dark at the bottom. It’s not a barber pole — nothing’s twisted. Three separate sections of wrapper laid down in bands. Picture a café con leche in a clear glass: coffee at the bottom, milk layered over it, dark crema on top. They built the drink into the cigar.

🌿 The dark sections are Connecticut Broadleaf — the coffee. The light one is Connecticut Shade — the milk.

✋ Harder to roll than a spiral: separate leaves, cut and placed, with seams that have to burn clean across three wrappers.

🇳🇮 Infused with real Nicaraguan estate-grown coffee — same country as the to***co.

😤 Before Liga Privada, before Undercrown, Drew Estate was the ACID company and the industry laughed. They kept going. Tabak Especial took five years to get right.

Honest take: keep it away from your other ci**rs. The infusion migrates — leave it in your main humidor a few weeks and everything starts tasting like coffee. I’ve watched guys wreck a good collection with one infused stick they forgot about.
