📛 It had to change its own name. Released in 2015 as simply Sobremesa, it was the first cigar Steve Saka ever put out under Dunbarton — the one that built the company. Then the lighter Brûlée spinoff took off and started confusing people, so in 2024 the original stepped aside and became Solita.

🍽️ Sobremesa — the time you stay at the table after the meal ends. Coffee’s out, nobody’s leaving, the conversation keeps going.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: JFR Corojo Mi Favorito

🌀 Hand-twisted pigtail cap and a closed, tucked foot — two labor-intensive finishing touches, on a value-priced cigar. Usually the first things a company cuts.

❤️ They didn’t name this size Toro or Gordo. They named it Mi Favorito — my favorite

Because of the closed foot, your first few puffs are pure wrapper — you taste the Corojo by itself before the filler joins in. Take your time there.

Honest take: a ring gauge this big means more filler, more air, a cooler burn and a longer smoke — but the flavor spreads out. The smaller JFR Corojos actually hit harder. This one isn’t about intensity, it’s about time.

🤝 Cofradía means brotherhood — and there are two Bolívars

🇨🇺 The original started in Havana around 1901 and became one of the strongest ci**rs coming out of Cuba

✈️ After the revolution the Cifuentes family — behind Bolívar and Partagás — left Cuba. Seventeen years later, in 1978, Ramón Cifuentes licensed the name to General Cigar for the American market

🎯 Flavor notes: cocoa, light sweetness, background pepper → brown sugar and earth, thick creamy smoke → ligero spice and a small climb in body
💪 Strength: Medium, start to finish

Partagás built its American reputation on a Cameroon wrapper — then spent the last decade-plus walking away from it. The 1845 went Ecuadorian. Black Label went Connecticut. The Cortado went Connecticut and moved to Nicaragua. New release after new release, no Cameroon.

Then came this one. The Cameroon’s back — just not where you can see it. It’s the binder, buried under the first Mexican wrapper in the brand’s history. And it’s 2015 leaf while everything else is 2020, so they went digging for eight-year-old to***co to put in the one spot nobody would ever look at. Partagás’s own word for that binder: synonymous with the brand.

Don’t let the San Andrés fool you into expecting a dark chocolate bomb. It’s a natural leaf, it’s medium, and the good stuff is underneath.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Undercrown Sun Grown

⚰️ Discontinued. Drew Estate cut the entire Sun Grown line in a 106-SKU reduction back in 2022

⏳ They chased this Ecuadorian Sumatra sun grown wrapper for 15 years before they could secure it. It was on the market five.

👷 Undercrown exists because the rollers were told to stop smoking so much Liga Privada — so they blended their own on the factory floor

Ramón Bueso started as a grower, became a roller at fifteen, and worked his way up to running the floor at Villazon in Honduras — the factory behind Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey and Excalibur. He spent four decades alongside legends like Frank Llaneza and Estelo Padrón, building blends that carried other people’s names. Then a few years ago he finally put his own name on a box.

A big powerful cigar can hide sloppy blending behind sheer force. A mild one can’t hide anything. Forty years in, and he chose the hard version.

Pepín named this one for his kids — Jaime and Janny. Two initials, one cigar.

But the band picked up a second meaning. In 2007 Jerry Cruz of Stogie Review lost his infant son Jeremiah — JJ — to SIDS at three months old. Every July 22nd, on his birthday, this community would light one of these and share it. Smoke a JJ for JJ. Two letters, two families.

And check the box: it doesn’t say Nicaragua. It says Miami. This is one of the last premium ci**rs still rolled in the United States, out of Pepín’s first little factory in Little Havana. My Father has already retired the Series JJ Maduro and the whole El Rey de los Habanos line — the blends carrying Pepín’s own name are a shrinking family.

Tabaquero means the person who rolls the cigar. Hamlet Paredes was not allowed to roll this one.

Twenty years a master roller inside the Partagás factory in Havana, flown around the world as a Habanos ambassador — and in all that time he had never touched a single leaf of non-Cuban to***co. Rocky Patel got him and his family out of Cuba, then handed him Mexican, Brazilian and Nicaraguan leaf and told him to build something. He blended it over months at Burn in Naples, Florida. But his visa wouldn’t let him travel to Nicaragua, so he never set foot in the factory that makes it. The blend is entirely his. The hands are somebody else’s.

Four countries in this cigar, and not one of them is Cuba.

Today’s Unlock 🔓: Aging Room Haváo

🌗 Haváo — old Cuban slang for a mix of two origins. That’s the blend in one word.

Most brands are named after a person or a place. Rafael Nodal named his after a room — the one where ci**rs sit and do nothing but age on cedar shelves. He thinks that’s where a cigar actually becomes good. So he partnered with Jochy Blanco at Tabacalera Palma, a third-generation Dominican family with their own farms in the Cibao Valley and the patience to sit on to***co.

You probably know Aging Room from Nicaragua and the AJ Fernandez heavy hitters. But the brand lives in the DR, and this is the mellow corner of it. Connecticut genetics on the outside, Cuban genetics on the inside. Morning cigar. Coffee cigar. The one you hand somebody who says everything is too strong.
