This was January 28, 2025, a significant day as Leif, my loyal black Labrador Retriever, officially retired as my guide dog. Having been a dedicated team for just over eleven years, this transition marks the beginning of a new phase. Fast forward to February 1, 2025—Leif is now only three days into his retirement.
The wonderful news is that Leif will remain with me as my pet. There was no way I was going to separate our partnership!
Even in these early days of retirement, Leif has shown signs that he still wants to work. He approaches the door as I prepare to go out while I use my long white cane again. In the past year, I allowed him to choose whether he wanted to join me on my outings, which means he’s not always gone out with me. Yet, now he waits at the door, eager to be harnessed like before, only to see me close the door as he watches.
This is clearly a period of adjustment for both of us.
I've tried taking him for walks where I’m not working—using my cane for navigation while he walks alongside me. However, I’ve discovered that it’s quite challenging. Being left-handed presents difficulties with a guide dog trained to work on the left. The combination of my cane, my legs, and Leif's creates quite the tangle! I’m considering leash-only guiding in familiar areas, which would allow me to practice these techniques without needing my cane. But, this will take time to master.
In these three days of retirement, Leif certainly still wants to fulfill his guiding responsibilities.
You might wonder why I can’t just slip the harness back on for one more stroll. The guiding harness has been taken away and is currently en route to Guide Dogs for the Blind for refurbishment, either for a new team or for spare parts.
This step was essential so that we aren't tempted to take just one last walk as a handler and guide. Although it's tempting, it poses a dangerous risk for both Leif and me, especially since he will turn thirteen at the end of March 2025. He deserves a well-earned and safe retirement with all the fond memories of our time together.
I hope this establishes clarity regarding our situation.
