I was fully back in wine merchant mode yesterday for a few hours. I had found out that Charles Smith, icon of Washington wine, was doing a tasting at Minne which is a lovely and expansive wine bar right on the Esplanadi. As I was walking to the event I was remarking on how crazy it is I had never met Mr. Smith in the 10 years I lived in Seattle or the 10 years I was a wine merchant in Pensacola. It is always a delight to revisit his K Vintners Syrahs which I always featured at BTG. Through I ran through many pallets of his Velvet Devil merlot and Kung Fu Girl riesling out at the Wahoos games. Yesterday he told the great multi-layered story of his premium "Sixto" chardonnay which partially harkens to the remarkable story of Sixto Rodríguez whose story was told in the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" ... anyway, after tasting through the 6 wines I got to catch up with Charles and we had a great wine-y convo like I used to fill my days with ... the wine industry is a wonderful web of the best people you'll ever meet and I fell right back into it chatting with Charles and marveling how we never met in person before despite knowing 1,000 people in common and then we got to share wine industry gossip of the Florida wine industry and the weird and wonderful people and places and that we had the same impressions of some of the characters ... and then finally he turns to me and says "Wait a second... what are you doing here?!?" So many worlds and a couple decades of this wild journey collapsed in that moment and it was time to take another sip of unmistakably Washington terroir... Charles Smith on yksi viinimaailman tunnetuimpia ja karismaattisimpia viinintekijöitä. Hänet tunnetaan yleisimmin Kung Fu Girlin luojana, m***a hän on myös yksi menestyneimmistä yhdysvaltalaisista viinintekijöistä ja hän on urallaan saanut yli 300 yli 95 pisteen arvostelua viineilleen arvostetuilta viinikriitikoilta ja voittanut lukuisia tunnustuksia johtavilta viinialan julkaisuilta, mm. ”Winemaker of the Year” Wine Enthusiast lehdeltä vuonna 2014.
Charlesin tastingit ovat aina yhdistelmä upeita viinejä ja uskomattomia tarinoita viinistä, elämästä ja musiikista (hän toimi rockbändin managerina yli 10 vuotta ennen siirtymistä viinintekijäksi). Charlesin tuntien tämä on tapahtuma joka ei tule jättämään ketään kylmäksi niin viinien kuin tarinoiden osalta!
