QUITE AN HONOR: Since weekly asphalt short track racing began here in the Great State of Maine, fans of the sport have followed championship points battles in every track's premier division.
Along with those often hard-fought championship fights, the fans also follow a season-long battle for Rookie-of-the-Year honors. At historic Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series sanction is headlined each week by the lightning-fast Pro Series division.
Despite not completing the entire 19-race season, Josh Childs and his Childs Motorsports/C3 Racing team earned Rookie-of-the-Year honors in Pro Series action at Beech Ridge for 2019. In nine starts, Josh recorded one top-five finish (June 15) and only finished outside the top 10 twice (May 4, July 2).
“This is icing on the cake for our 2019 season to earn this prestigious honor,” Childs said. “It took us a while to get our new Distance Racing Products car hooked up down there. Thanks to our skilled crew chief Ben Ashline and a hard-working crew, we made enough progress to where we could do this.”
Josh earned the Wildcat points title at Beech Ridge in 2018 and began a transition last fall into Super Late Model racing. This past August, he realized a lifelong dream by competing in his first Oxford 250. On Saturday, Sept. 7, he won his first SLM points feature at Oxford Plains Speedway.
“To have won a 50-lap feature against some of the best veterans out there and to have actually been a part of this year's 250 was just amazing,” Childs added. “I used to sit and watch the Oxford 250 as a kid and dream about someday being able to be out there, competing in Maine's biggest race.”
With this 2019 Pro Series Rookie-of-the-Year honor at Beech Ridge, Childs will have the honor of attending the annual NASCAR Home Tracks Champions awards banquet Dec. 7-8 at the Charlotte Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina.
It'll be a special experience he can't wait to savor.
“It's pretty amazing to think we'll be headed for the NASCAR banquet in a couple of months to celebrate with weekly points champions and top rookies from around the country,” Childs said. “I look forward to meeting other racers, NASCAR officials and just the experience itself. I'm very blessed.”
While the 2019 season may be over for C3 Racing, plans for 2020 are already in high gear. That rocket fast Distance car will get stripped down to its bare chassis in the off-season and gone over in fine detail.
When the new season rolls around, Josh Childs and his race team will have confidence and be set to go.
Our amazing 2019 season would not have happened without the support of our fine marketing partners, including Davis Rental Properties, Line-X of Western Maine, Dana's Heavy Duty Roadside Service, Pat's Pools & Hot Tubs, Farrar Carpentry Services, Aris Pizza & Subs, The Lost Gull Fish & Chips, Wake 'n Bakery, Polly’s Variety, Foothills Flooring & Tile, Racing For A Cure and The Wreck Dept.
We offer a sincere thanks to all of our fans and supporters for carrying us through another hectic season. The hard work paid off during late August with running the 250 and winning a 50-lapper in September.
We look forward to seeing you all at the off-season trade shows, and at the track next April.
