Most people have never heard of myeloma — until it changes their life forever.
March is Myeloma Awareness Month 🩸 and as the Leadership Committee Chair for Blood Cancer United North Florida, I'm using my platform to make sure more people know what this disease actually is.
Myeloma is a blood cancer that starts in your plasma cells — the very cells designed to protect you from infection. When one mutates, it multiplies uncontrollably inside the bone marrow, crowding out the healthy cells your body needs to survive.
Untreated, it can:
🦴 Weaken bones and cause fractures
🩸 Destroy the immune system's ability to fight infection
🫘 Damage the kidneys through abnormal protein buildup
In most patients, by the time of diagnosis it has already spread to multiple sites — which is why it's called multiple myeloma.
The good news? Blood Cancer United offers FREE support every step of the way — oncology nurses, social workers, clinical trial navigation, and financial assistance.
