Tonight we toast the most important woman in my life — my beloved daughter — with Aglianico, the "poor man's Barolo of the South." Born of volcanic earth in Basilicata and Campania, Aglianico is a wine that rewards patience: tannic and fierce in its youth, then unfolding into something noble, complex, and enduring. A fitting pour for a daughter who has grown into the same. I love you to the universe and back. 🍷❤️

Coming soon to the shelf… 🍷

Iris Vineyards’ 2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a beautiful new Oregon find—lively, smooth, and made for the dinner table. Expect dark cherry and blackberry up front, with a little earthy savoriness, gentle spice, black-tea tannin, and that bright acidity that keeps you reaching for another sip.

Medium-bodied with just enough grip, this is the kind of Pinot that will shine with roast chicken, mushroom risotto, cedar-plank salmon, or pork tenderloin with a cherry mostarda moment. Wine Enthusiast gave it 91 points, but honestly, it’s the balance and easy elegance that won me over.

Keep an eye out—this one will be arriving soon. 🍷😜

Customer requested: Affogato pairing—an Italian-inspired dessert of hot espresso poured over creamy gelato, finished with a light modern touch. Served with amaretti crumble, dark chocolate shavings, and optional toasted pistachios.

Classic Affogato
A simple, elegant Italian dessert: hot espresso “drowns” cold gelato for a perfect bittersweet finish.
Serves 2
Ingredients
4 small scoops of high-quality vanilla or fiordilatte gelato
2 shots of freshly brewed espresso
Optional: crushed amaretti, shaved dark chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, or a splash of Frangelico or amaretto
Method
Chill two small dessert glasses or cups.
Add two scoops of gelato to each glass.
Brew the espresso just before serving.
Pour one hot espresso shot over each serving tableside.
Finish lightly with crushed amaretti, dark chocolate, or hazelnuts, if using.
Serve immediately with a spoon—before the gelato fully melts.
Modern twist
Use pistachio gelato with espresso and a pinch of flaky sea salt, or stracciatella gelato with shaved orange zest and dark chocolate.

Tonight’s pour: the 2019 Saliato Colli Perugini DOC from Chiorri—a soulful Umbrian red with true Old World charm and just the right touch of rustic appeal. 🍷

This Sangiovese-led blend is earthy, savory, and dark-fruited, with a gentle herbal lift, lively acidity, and beautifully polished structure:

50% Sangiovese
30% Merlot
20% Cabernet Sauvignon

It was an absolute match for a cast-iron-seared New York sirloin, roasted seasoned potatoes, and a colorful medley of vegetables. 🥩 🍷

The Sangiovese brought freshness and savory lift, the Merlot added plushness, and the Cabernet Sauvignon contributed darker fruit and just enough tannic grip to meet that rich, seared steak crust bite for bite. The acidity kept the whole plate feeling bright and fresh.

A delicious reminder that some of Italy’s most satisfying reds come from beyond the usual headlines. It truly doesn’t get much better than this. Perfect match! 🤪🍇🍷

Tonight’s pour: 2019 Saliato Colli Perugini DOC from Chiorri—a soulful Umbrian red with Old World charm and just the right touch of rustic appeal. Earthy, savory, and dark-fruited, with a gentle herbal lift and polished structure, it was a natural match for a cast-iron-seared New York sirloin.

The wine’s acidity kept each bite feeling fresh, while its subtle tannins complemented the steak’s rich crust beautifully. A tasty reminder that some of Italy’s most satisfying reds come from beyond the usual headlines. 🍷🥩

This 2019 red blend of:
50% Sangiovese
30% Merlot
20% Cabernet Sauvignon
That Sangiovese-led blend explains why it paired so well with my sirloin: savory freshness and structure from Sangiovese, plushness from Merlot, and darker fruit/tannin grip from

Tre Monti Petrignone 2007 Sangiovese Riserva — a beautiful cellar pull, showing the grace that mature Sangiovese can deliver. The nose opens with dried cherry, black tea, leather, cedar, and a savory, earth-driven note, layered with hints of to***co and balsamic herbs.
On the palate, it is fully evolved yet still composed: softened tannins frame flavors of dried red berries, plum skin, roasted herbs, spice, and forest floor. There’s a lovely acidity running through it, keeping the wine lifted and food-friendly rather than heavy. The finish is long, gently rustic, and distinctly Italian.
A soulful, mature bottle—less about fruit-forward power and more about nuance, texture, and the quiet pleasure of letting a well-kept wine tell its story.

João Pato aka Duckman Baga Duck 2022 is a vivid, unconventional Bairrada red with dark cherry/berry fruit, high acidity, and a firm, grippy tannic structure that makes the “Burgundy of Portugal” nickname feel apt in spirit more than style. It’s a non-vintage blend made from Baga and Touriga Nacional, so it leans more rustic, energetic, and food-friendly than polished or silky

Tasting profile

The wine is described as rich, complex, and persistent, with dark cherry, berry, pine resin spice, and a strong acid line. A tasting note from another Duckman Baga bottling also points to herbal, dried cherry, plum, smoke, and spice notes, which fit the grape’s character well.
Style and context Baga is one of Portugal’s most distinctive red grapes, and João Pato’s wines are widely associated with natural, avant-garde Bairrada expressions. That gives this bottling a Burgundy-like comparison in the sense of terroir focus and complexity, but the texture is typically more tannic and savory than classic Pinot Noir

Food pairings
This is a great bottle for roasted pork, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, grilled sausages, or anything with savory richness that can handle the wine’s acidity and grip. It should also work well with rustic, peppery dishes and aged cheeses.
