Message to the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump

From: Marco
Subject: Petition for a Second Chance as a Father, Worker, and Human Being

Mr. President,

With all due respect, I address you as a man who acknowledges his mistakes, but who can also demonstrate his achievements. My name is Marco, and I write to you with my heart in my hand, from a place of humility, to tell you my story and ask for an opportunity that could change my life, that of my daughter, and my family.

Ignorance

In 2002, when I was just 16 years old, I was working as a plumber's assistant in Mexico. At the time, my 13-year-old sister became pregnant, and I made a life-changing decision: I crossed the border into the United States with the sole purpose of helping her. I was young, with no knowledge of laws or rights. I didn't understand the legal implications or the risks. But I understood the value of family, and that's what drove me.

I achieved my goal and returned to Mexico. And although I made mistakes, I also had many triumphs. They weren't economic triumphs, but rather triumphs of character and faith. I learned to help others and decided to serve my community by joining the Mexican police force. It was my way of giving back, of directing my life toward good.

Fear

In 2008, I lived through a devastating experience that I can't yet describe publicly, but I am willing to reveal to the relevant authorities if they give me the opportunity. That event filled me with fear, not out of cowardice, but because of the severity of the internal corruption within the police force where I worked. That fear forced me to flee, to protect my life and my integrity.

Today, I regret not having been able to do things correctly. But I am human, and like all human beings, I make mistakes. I'll probably never be perfect, but if there were a perfect immigration judge, I would ask for one thing: a second chance to prove that I'm a good man, a good father, a good neighbor, and, above all, a tireless worker for the well-being of my family.

My Life Today

You can see some of my efforts on the Lulu's Lunchbox page, where I work hard to support my family. Everything I do, I do for my daughter, Lucero, a U.S. citizen, and my greatest motivation for wanting to emerge from the shadows.

I know the immigration system has many flaws. Presidents, congressmen, and senators say so. Every four years, it's used as a political weapon. But meanwhile, those of us who want to do things right remain trapped between the law, prejudice, and neglect.

I ask you, Mr. President, to also listen to those who deserve a chance. Many people in my community, American citizens, know me. They could speak for me. And I know that if you listened to their voices, you would see that my story is not that of a criminal, but that of a father who only wants justice and dignity.

Unity and Hope

Politics and religion have divided us, but I believe in unity. I believe in what human beings can do when we put aside hatred and truly listen to each other. You, Mr. President, survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and what you call a political witch hunt. I don't know if I will survive this (immigration) witch hunt, but I can tell you that many of us identify with your struggle.

In June 2015, at the end of your speech on immigration, you acknowledged that there are also good migrants. That phrase gave me hope. I am one of those good migrants, and I am ready to prove it.

To the General Public
If you, who are reading this, support and understand me, share this message. If you disagree, share it as well to show that hatred has no color, race, or flag. Neither does justice.

Sincerely,
Marco
Father. Hardworking. A man who still believes in second chance 🙏🏼

We originally had the idea to reopen Lulu’s Lunchbox again but unfortunately a political agenda made it hard for our people… with that being said I wrote a little letter for everyone!!

To the Community of Moultrie, GA and Colquitt County:

Today, I write with a broken heart and full of uncertainty. After more than a decade of effort, sacrifice, and love invested in our businesses, my family is facing one of the most painful decisions we’ve ever had to make: to permanently close our beloved Lulu’s Lunchbox, and possibly another of our businesses in this city that has been our home.

We didn’t come here looking for trouble, my husband, Marco, was a police officer in Mexico. An honest man who, instead of giving in to corruption and the power of drug traffickers, chose to save his life and escape. He refused to be part of a contaminated system, and because of that, he was threatened. Out of fear, he crossed the border undocumented. Was it a mistake? Maybe. Was it a crime? Only if the crime is wanting to live with dignity.

That was his only “crime”: entering without papers, seeking freedom and safety. Here, he found something greater, a new life, a family. We met, got married, and had our daughter Lucero, a little girl born in this country a U.S. citizen by right. But today, that right is being threatened by President Trump’s administration, which is trying to take away her citizenship simply because her father is undocumented.

My family has been faced with the painful decision of whether to keep or close our businesses for good. This is how we survive; it’s our livelihood. We’ve been a part of this community for more than 10 years. We contribute to the well being of the county through our taxes, and we also serve our customers with respect and heart.

My husband is a hardworking, kind man who works more than 90 hours a week and gives his best for our people regardless of skin color or language. It is heartbreaking to think that we now have to carefully decide our next step because of what’s happening in our small town. The uncertainty, the unknown of what could happen, is a terrifying thought.

We’ve invested and continue to invest here, but the question is: should we start investing in another country, because we’re no longer wanted here? Not even our children. And we don’t have five million dollars to buy a golden visa something only people at the president’s millionaire level can afford.

This is not just our story. It’s the story of thousands of families. People who grew up here, who know no other country, who built their lives here and who are now being forced to return to a place that is no longer theirs. A place they may have never even known.

Immigrants are often spoken of as if we were a threat. But not all undocumented immigrants are bad people. Even using the word “illegal” feels cruel. There are bad people who were born here, and good people who came seeking a better future. It’s not fair to punish everyone for the mistakes of a few.

I am not undocumented, but I live with the same fear because my husband is. And the saddest part is seeing the fear in our daughter’s eyes. Seeing children who can’t sleep at night, afraid that their parents won’t come home from work. Watching our children’s dreams collapse because of political decisions that ignore their humanity.

And now, the most outrageous part: trying to take citizenship away from a child born here. What message does that send? That being born in this country is no longer enough to belong? That the children of immigrants aren’t equal? This idea is an insult to what this nation is supposed to represent.

To think that we live in a country that could do this to a child is a deep wound. To think that someone could have more right to be a citizen than my daughter Lucero, just because of who her father is, makes me sick and breaks my heart.

This is how we say goodbye to Lulu’s Lunchbox. With sadness, but also with gratitude. Thank you to those who supported us, who gave us a chance, who made us feel like part of this community.

I don’t know what will come next. Maybe another country. Maybe new battles. But what I do know is that we will continue fighting for what is right for our families, for our children, for the dreams we will not let be taken away.

With love and respect,
Amanda
