UPDATE: 10:34 am - The City of Newport is evacuating a one-mile radius of Pacific Seafood. A shelter is being set up for evacuees at Sam Case Elementary located at 459 NE 12th St. Evacuees may bring their pets.

The evacuation is due to a potential ammonia contamination in the area from the plant. We recommend staying inside if you are in Newport today. If you must go outside, you should wear a mask. Updates will continue to be made on this post.

Se ha habilitado un refugio para los evacuados en la escuela primaria Sam Case (Sam Case Elementary), ubicada en 459 NE 12th St. Los evacuados pueden llevar a sus mascotas.

Update as of 10:24 am -

Both Newport Bay Candle Co. locations will be closed today (Sunday) as well as all businesses on Newport historic bayfront due to Level three (3) evacuation has been increased to a one (1) mile radius.

First responders are on scene of a possible fire located at 213 SW Bay Blvd. Newport, OR - PLEASE STAY CLEAR OF THE SCENE. Evacuations are occurring within an approximate 1/2 mile radius of this location.

Newport Paid Parking Shifts to Weekends Only Nov. 2; Weekday Parking Free Through April 2027

Newport’s paid parking districts will transition to the off-season parking schedule beginning Monday, Nov. 2. Through April 2027, parking in public Bayfront areas and the Nye Beach turnaround will be free Monday through Friday.

Parking will also be free on Saturday, Oct. 31, for Halloween trick-or-treating at Bayfront and Nye Beach businesses, and Saturday, Dec. 5, as the community celebrates the holiday season with events including the annual Lighted Boat Parade and holiday tree lighting.

Paid parking will remain in effect on Saturdays and Sundays, with times, rates and restrictions remaining unchanged. Vehicles displaying valid and visible disability placards, plates, or permits may park for free in any space within the City’s paid parking districts, excluding private lots and areas. Please check posted signs for parking hours, restrictions and other limitations when parking on City streets and in public lots.

Revenue generated from the paid parking program is reinvested into improvements and programs exclusively within the City’s parking districts. For more information about parking locations, rates, and payment options, visit

Not sure what goes on at a Coffee With a Cop event? The best questions are often the everyday things people have wondered about but never had an easy opportunity to ask. The atmosphere is casual and informal, and you can ask Chief Malloy, Lt. Gainer, Lt. Haynes, Patrol Officers and Community Service Officers any questions you have.

For example:
- What does a typical shift look like for an Officer?
- What are the most common calls you respond to?
- What is the biggest problem you’re seeing in our community right now?
- What should I do if I see something suspicious but I’m not sure it’s worth calling about?
- When should I call 911 versus the non-emergency number?
- What happens after I call the police?
- Why do multiple Officers sometimes show up for what seems like a minor call?
- Why do Officers sometimes sit in parking lots for long periods of time?
- What information is most helpful when reporting a crime or suspicious person?
