BATTLE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINES. APRIL 30. TWO CULT PRODUCERS.

South Africa is on an incredible winning streak right now, with an embarrassment of riches from terroir to talent, a wealth of old-vine sites, and an amazing diversity of grapes and styles. Our good friend Zaan Eksteen, a South African himself and a passionate advocate for the country’s wines, has proposed a fascinating seminar for April 30: a throwdown between two very hot cult producers, Naudé and Rall Wines.

These producers are both rock stars of the Canopy Wines portfolio that Zaan represents, and he knows both sets of wines intimately. Zaan will take us through a series of side-by-sides and help us understand each producer’s philosophy and style as we compare their acclaimed wines. The two producers are good friends, but just for tonight, we’ll pit them against each other see whose wines prevail and taste some amazing South African wine in the process! Link in bio.

Getting our hands on enough of Arianna Occhipinti’s wine to feature in a newsletter is a rare occurrence. But guess what? We did it. And if you’re not signed up, we really don’t know what to tell you.

If you want to understand why Arianna is an absolute superstar of the wine world, this bottle is the perfect syllabus. She proves that “natural” and “low-intervention” winemaking shouldn’t be an excuse for funky or flawed wines. Rather, it is a vehicle for absolute purity, transparency, and a profound sense of place.

In a rare Alsace-focused event on the Flatiron Wines mezzanine, we are delighted to welcome a key estate from the Vineyard Brands portfolio, Domaine Weinbach, with special guest co-owner Eddy Leiber-Faller. He will join us for an Alsace masterclass at 6pm on Tuesday, April 21. Eddy will present a selection of his wines that best express the terroir of this benchmark family estate. Few names in Burgundy inspire as much loyalty among collectors as Domaine Michel Lafarge, and this week’s newsletter subscribers got access to our allocation.

Widely regarded as the benchmark grower in Volnay, the domaine’s wines are prized for their soulful, deeply expressive character and their ability to evolve beautifully over time.

Even at the “basic” Bourgogne level, Lafarge’s identity is unmistakable. This Bourgogne Rouge comes from more than 40-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Petit Pré, just below Volnay—parcels once classified as Volnay Villages—and is farmed and vinified with the same care as the domaine’s legendary premier crus.

The 2023 vintage is a standout across Burgundy, and this wine is absolutely superb. It’s already drinking beautifully, but this ‘23 has the balance and depth to age effortlessly for 10 to 20 years. Our recommendation: pick up a couple of bottles to enjoy now, and a couple more to forget about in the cellar.

One of our favorite Finger Lakes producers, Forge Cellars, has great wine and a great story. Founder Rick Rainey will join us on the Flatiron Wine School mezzanine to share Forge’s delicious wines, his own wine journey, and a report on the last few fantastic vintages in the region. We’ll taste Forge’s dry Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc wines including several single-vineyard examples. Link in bio to purchase.

Radikon. If you know you know. On the few occasions a year that these wines show up in New York they tend to disappear quickly, and if you’re a newsletter subscriber, you get dibs. Link in bio to subscribe.

These wines are powerful, jaw-droppingly intense, with a backbone of racy acidity interwoven with a fleshy, sensual texture. They are low-intervention works of art made with care and confidence.

In our newsletter today, we dropped Radikon’s Slatnik, Sivi and Rosso Sasa, which compose Sasa Radikon’s “S” line. They’re all immediately accessible without sacrificing that trademark intensity, and a fantastic introduction to the Radikon lineup.

Representing one of the crown jewels of the Louis/Dressner portfolio, Louis-Benoît Desvignes of Morgon grower Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes will be joining us on the mezzanine for a very special masterclass. On Tuesday, March 31 at 6pm on our mezzanine, Louis-Benoît will present the amazingly expressive wines of this icon of Beaujolais. Link to tickets in bio.

Desvignes wines are extraordinarily expressive and balanced year in and year out. As vintage conditions vary widely, and even wildly, in recent years all over France, the domaine’s consistency is that much more striking. These are not simple, juicy, playful Beaujolais: they are concentrated, structured, sophisticated Gamay wines that transmit their terroir transparently. They are relatively “serious” yet still a pleasure to drink in their youth—while also being prime cellar candidates. Desvignes flies slightly under the radar while unquestionably growing and making some of the very finest wines out of Morgon.

All hail Noelia de Paz, the Queen of Albarín! Yes, we mean Albarín, an obscure Spanish grape variety with just 90 hectares planted worldwide.

We don’t write about Léon — this flat, arid region isn’t especially well-known, though Bierzo’s Mencía-based wines have garnered some fame. Léon’s wine scene dominated by two grape varieties, the aforementioned white grape Albarín (not to be confused with Galician Albariño) and the red Prieto Picudo.

Noelia grew up at her family’s winery, and after working everywhere from the sales department to vineyard management, she established her own project called LaOsa, Spanish for “the bear”. She’s a true champion of Léon’s unique terroir and indigenous varieties, but her passion for great wine doesn’t stop there, and (somewhat confusingly) she also makes a fabulous Rías Baixas Albariño from some of Galicia’s best terroir.

We love that this talented, passionate winemaker is crafting delicious wines from her home turf, that also happen to be incredibly well-priced. These wines are already great deals, but this week’s newsletter features no-brainer bargains. Sign up at the link in bio.
