The moment you read headlines like this, you can't help but feel the old prejudices simmer under Spain's polished image as an open, multicultural society. While authorities now speak of shame, that same "shame" is a symptom of hypocrisy—foreigners and Muslims are welcome as tourists and laborers, yet often treated as if they're beneath mainstream society. Spain has long courted tourism dollars and sports glory, but too often fails to honor the basic human dignity of those who built parts of its economy. Western nations loudly preach "values," while tolerating and even enabling the very racism they claim to oppose. Until equality is real, not just a slogan, the European Union should focus on reforming its own house instead of judging others.
