Broc Cellars

Wednesday, Jan 28 5-7 pm

We're thrilled to have Broc Cellars (https://broccellars.com/pages/about-us) coming back to visit us again this week!

I'll always remember the first time I tasted a Broc Cellars wine. It was not long after I'd opened Faubourg Wines, and the wine was the 2011 Vine Starr Zinfandel. It was unlike any other California zinfandel I'd ever experienced! Light, fresh, lively, and bursting with strawberry jam and rose petals.

I loved it, and I instantly understood:
This was the beginning of a new wave of American wine.

Today, Broc Cellars makes many, many different wines from various sources in California, all farmed organically. The 'house style' hasn't changed a bit. These are lighter-bodied, fresh and fruity, balanced wines.

Stop by this Wednesday and try five Broc Cellars wines:

Love RosΓ©
Love Red
Kou Kou Cab Franc
Lagrein Red
Massa Cabernet

If you can't make it to our tasting, you can still find Broc Cellars at a few other events around town. You can also follow them on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/broccellars/https://www.instagram.com/broccellars/) to keep up.

The Year in Review

2025 brought many changes to Faubourg Wines. Maddie earned a year of experience working in photojournalism full-time, while still helping at the shop on weekends. Natalie and Carly both picked up additional jobs at other local spots, but remained solidly part of our crew. Allison pared down her list of multiple wine biz employers, now splitting her time between Faubourg and Patron Saint, when she's not reading cookbooks and preparing amazing meals. After acting in some plays and doing improv shows (many of which I enjoyed), Topher picked up a new full-time job and said farewell to Faubourg. Sierrah stuck with us in spite of her demanding practice as a Pilates Instructor, and was an absolute life-saver during all of the transition. And we brought on two lovely new crew members, Silver and Gaia. πŸ‘πŸ‘

One theme this year seems to be people drinking less, in general. You may have heard about this; I can confirm that it's definitely true. And while that fact does present a challenge for me, I suppose it's a good thing. We ditched beer selling almost entirely, filling those shelves instead with interesting and tasty non-alcoholic cocktails, aperitifs, and wines. These items remain in high-demand, as more people want to enjoy the benefits of socializing and imbibing without the booze. Cheers to you!

The Summers remain insanely difficult. I worked harder than ever this Summer to meticulously manage inventory and cashflow. I made some personal sacrifices, and I had to pare down the inventory in a fairly dramatic way from June through September. But customers didn't seem bothered by having fewer selections in those months, and the bottom line is-- we survived.

We lost two treasured neighbors: Pokechan and Gerken's Bike Shop. The latter hits pretty hard, as the bike shop pre-dates Faubourg by several years, and Gerken's has been a wonderful friend and neighbor from day 1 of Faubourg. We'll miss the bike shop, but Jon has assured us he's not going anywhere. So, we'll still see him in the wine shop, and of course in the parades.

Pokechan evolved- with some of the same family members- into Moi, a new family-style Vietnamese restaurant. It is spectacular! I highly recommend you try it. They've already had some excellent reviews, including this piece for the Times-Picayune (https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/eat-drink/get-homestyle-vietnamese-food-at-moi-restaurant-in-nola/article_4aeffbd0-d1c8-4aac-9571-ce6a6e30493f.html) by Ian McNulty.

We're looking forward to a lot of local shopping this weekend, now that we're just days away from Christmas. I put in some extra orders this week to ensure that we have an amazing selection available to you. We also have some special allocations landing today, so give yourself plenty of time to browse when you come through. And of course, we're loaded up with sparklers for New Year's.

As we prepare to close the books on 2025, I offer my heart-felt thanks to all of the people who help make our community unique, inclusive and resilient. In a world that has become increasingly difficult to live in, in many ways, our shared connections are more important than ever.

I started this shop to create community through wine, and I continue to succeed in that goal every day, thanks to you. I love this community.

Thank you.

Gift Wine, Not Stuff!

In the final days before Christmas, many of us are in a scramble to pick up last-minute gifts for our friends, colleagues, loved ones, and important people who have made a difference in our lives such as teachers, care-givers, and neighbors.

Something to consider: most of us do not need or want more "stuff." By giving them food or wine instead, you're offering a pleasurable experience to enjoy anytime, and with whomever they choose.

Wine is a shared moment of joy, preserved in a bottle.
I think that makes it a pretty amazing gift.

Many people are afraid to give wine as a gift because they don't know what kind of wine a person might like, or because they don't even know whether or not someone enjoys drinking wine. If you feel this way, I'd argue that you're over-thinking it.

Even people who don't drink wine often will usually appreciate having something available to them for a special occasion, or a special meal. Since they don't buy wine regularly, many of these folks are intimidated by making decisions about what to select, and will appreciate having something hand-picked for them.

Even people who don't drink alcohol at all can appreciate having a nice bottle on-hand for entertaining purposes.

Often, when I've given someone a bottle of wine, I hear from them weeks or months later. They tell me about the meal they had, how the pairing worked, which friends were around. They share the stories that were told. We might swap recipes. It's wonderful. In this way, wine is a connective thread.

Spotlight: Local Amaro

Mamou Spirits Co. (https://www.mamouspirits.com) , a new amaro producer right here in New Orleans, arrived on the scene this month. We were able to stock their Traiteur Amaro just in time for the holidays, and wow- it's turned out to be one of the most popular gift items of the season! And for good reason: it's complex, it's interesting, it's delicious, it has broad appeal, and it's in a beautiful bottle. Amaro is hugely popular right now, and this one is made right here at home with native Louisiana botanicals that are traditionally believed to offer many health benefits.

Follow Mamou Spirits Co. on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/mamouspirits/)

We have another case arriving today.
We currently offer Traiteur Amaro at $45/bottle.

At Faubourg Wines

Well, hello there! I'm writing to let you know we've got a lot going on at the shop this Wednesday, November 5. I'm really looking forward to an evening of art, horticulture, wine tasting and oyster slurping.

Let's get November started right!

Kiernan Dunn Horticultural Calendar Release Sale 4-7pm

IYKYK- and it's another stunner this year! Kiernan will be selling calendars in the shop from 4-7 PM.

One important thing to note is that the special release sale price of $65 is for CASH PAPER MONEY ONLY. Prepare accordingly!

OK, so if you don't know- Kiernan Dunn is a local artist who specializes in printmaking. Her stuff is very cool. (Take a peep at her Etsy site. (https://www.etsy.com/shop/KiernanDunn) )

Each year Kiernan makes a big, beautiful wall calendar. (My 2025 calendar is 23"H x 17.5"W.) It's an original, numbered, one-of-a-kind piece of functional art that changes with each season. It makes an INCREDIBLE holiday gift, but you'll want one for yourself, too.

This one-day, in-person sale at Faubourg Wines is the primary way that Kiernan sells these calendars. IF there are any left afterward, they will be more expensive, and hard to get.

This year's calendar has a vintage vibe, in my opinion. Here's a sneak peek from Kiernan:

Wine Tasting 5-7pm

Our friend Meredith Acocella of Porto Vino Imports joins us from 5-7 pm to sample four awesome wines from Italy, including selections from Sardinia and Sicily. As usual, the tasting is $5 per person, refundable with any same-day bottle purchase. You'll definitely want to try these fall-friendly wines.

🌸 🌼 🌻 Seed Swap 🌻 🌼 🌸

I've harvested some seeds from my flower garden, and I'm ready to share.

Got seeds? Bring 'em! Want seeds? Take'em!
Free seeds, all day.

Little Moon Oysters

Fresh-shucked Grand Isle oysters available for purchase from Little Moon Oyster Ranch, 4-7pm.

Welcome, Fran Kysela

This Wednesday at the shop we welcome a special guest: Master Sommelier Fran Kysela! Fran founded his importing company, Kysela, Pere et Fils (KPF) in 1994. In the years since, KPF has earned a reputation for discovering and importing a beautifully curated and diverse roster of top-quality producers.

This will be our first time meeting Fran, and we're really looking forward to it. It's a rare opportunity to meet and taste with a pillar of the US wine trade who carries such a depth and breadth of experience and knowledge of fine wine.

Cat has selected four wines from the Kysela portfolio for our tasting on Wednesday, 10/8, 5-7PM:

ChΓ’teau de la Chaume (https://www.kysela.com/cellier-du-chateau-de-la-chaume.html) - Bourgogne Blanc 2023
Guillemot-Michel (https://www.kysela.com/domaine-guillemot-michel.html) - VirΓ©-ClessΓ© 2016
Alain de la Treille (https://www.kysela.com/maison-alain-de-la-treille.html) - Chinon 2020
Domaine de la Mordoree (https://www.kysela.com/domaine-de-la-mordoree.html) - Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2023

In addition, we will be featuring two Kysela wines by-the-glass at the bar:

Hugl (https://www.kysela.com/hugl-wimmer.html) Weine Gruner Veltliner 2024
and
Terre dei Buth Frizzante Rose (https://www.kysela.com/wine/terre-dei-buth-frizzante-rose-special-cuvee.html)

Hope to see you at the shop on Wednesday!

Little Moon Grab & Go Sacks are Back!

Now that the weather is cooling down, we've started stocking our little oyster cooler with Little Moons again! You may have seen Ian McNulty's post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DPW8P1Ojn9o/?img_index=1) about it on Instagram last week. The 25-ct sacks are great because it's just enough for an intimate dinner, and a manageable quantity to shuck at home. These oysters are dainty, briny little umami bombs, and we love them. Thank goodness it's oyster season again...

Soooo Ready for Fall

We are in the final push to get πŸ‘ to πŸ‘ theπŸ‘ otherπŸ‘ side πŸ‘ of Summer. As we sweat it out day-by-day, getting "creative" about paying bills (borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, as they say), calling in favors, keeping an eye on the tropics... we also look eagerly ahead toward Fall.

Joe put the Saints' preseason game on TV today, and the sounds of the dome filling my living room inspired a strong craving for my favorite Saints season soup. Making soup when it's 90+ degrees out may be crazy, but by mid-August, Summer has made me crazy enough. And it's SO easy to make, I decided to go for it. I'm glad I did, as I found it as delicious and satisfying as ever.

So I'll be sharing that recipe with you below, and you should know that it pairs perfectly with my current "wine of the moment." Enjoy!

Wine of the Moment

If you told me at any point that I would fall in love with a Marsanne/Roussane blend from Argentina, I'd have laughed it off. But I have, head-over-heels, and her name is Geisha de Jade. And I've just lowered the price to get this wine below $30 because I really, really want you to try it.

With notes of lime leaf, almond, white flowers, rock salt and coriander, Geisha has medium palate weight and a waxy texture reminiscent of chenin blanc. Elegant, yet assertive, this wine has elevated, yet graceful acidity. And with no oak and an ABV of just 11.6%, it will enhance a wide variety of foods -- even some spicy ones-- with ease.

Geisha de Jade is produced by Ver Sacrum in Los Chacayes, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina at 3600m altitude. The vineyard is comprised of calcareous river stone, trellised with high density in an east-west direction to minimize sun exposure. The grapes, (50/50 Marsanne-Roussanne) are fermented whole-cluster (stems included) using native yeast for three days. The free-run juice is added to open-top barrels to ferment oxidatively, under flor. Then, the remaining juice is pressed off to finish in concrete cube. The resulting wines are then reunited to create this utterly complex, finessed and delicious wine.

So come grab a bottle before I drink it all!

Saints Season Soup

Ingredients:

1 lb smoked Louisiana hot sausage, sliced into discs
2 bunches curly kale, ripped off the stems and course chopped
1-1.5 lbs small yellow potatoes, sliced thin
1T caraway seeds, ground in a mortar & pestle
2 quarts chicken stock
1 bottle of un-oaked, dry white wine
2T rice vinegar
2 tsp course salt (or to taste)

Instructions:

First, pour yourself a glass of the cooking wine to enjoy while you cook.

Brown the hot sausage slices on medium-high heat in a dutch oven or large heavy soup pot. Once browned to your liking, deglaze with the rest of the bottle of white wine, scraping the bottom of the pot with a wooden roux spoon. Simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the alcohol to cook off.

Add chicken stock and ground caraway seeds, stir. Add potatoes and kale, mix it up, careful to keep the kale from jumping out of the pot. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer to cook kale down until it incorporates itself into the soup. Stir some more. Add the vinegar and salt, simmer until potatoes are cooked through.

From start to finish, this easily takes less than an hour! And it's hearty enough to serve as Sunday dinner, along with other game-day snacks.

Pair with an un-oaked, high-acid, lower ABV white wine like Ver Sacrum Geisha de Jade. Also goes great with beer!
