Two families. Two companies. Same idea, built separately. 💙

Ryan Rodriguez started Ohana Ci**rs in 2014 with his father Frank. "Ohana" means family in Hawaiian, and Ryan picked it on purpose — because a cigar lounge is one of the only places on earth where people who'd never cross paths anywhere else end up sitting together, becoming friends over nothing but a shared love of the leaf. Around that same time, another father-son team, Madison Money and his dad, were building 262 Ci**rs with the same philosophy, just their own version of it.

A few years ago, the two families stopped being separate companies and actually became family. Ohana took a stake in 262. 262 took a stake in Ohana. Together they became Ohana Nui — "Big Family" — and their first release carries a Hawaiian Banyan tree on the band, a quiet nod to the massive 150-year-old tree in Lahaina that survived the 2023 Maui fires and is still fighting to grow back.

If any of this sounds familiar, it should. It's basically the same thing we believe about this lounge.

When NCC opened in 2019, nobody involved knew a thing about DeMouche. Didn't know about the opera singer, the factory, the fire chief — none of it. They just thought this town deserved a real cigar shop.

Somebody found the old newspaper archives after the doors were already open. That's when they learned the original Nacogdoches Cigar Company had stood two blocks from where NCC was built — over a hundred years earlier.

Nobody planned that. It just happened to be true.

We didn't set out to resurrect anything. Turns out we already had. 💙

A cigar maker learns his craft in Cuba, alongside master rollers, sometime in the 1980s. His name was Esteban Carreras. By 1996, he'd launched a brand carrying his own name — first in the Dominican Republic, built on techniques most companies had already started cutting corners on.

The brand eventually landed with an American, Craig Cunningham, who moved the whole operation to Estelí, Nicaragua and built Tabacalera Carreras from the ground up. One detail we love — his master blender, Gonzalo Puentes, used to work for Cuba's Ministry of Agriculture, developing to***co seed strains for the government. Some of what he learned there made it into a blend called Taken From the Devil's Hand — corojo seeds the story says were smuggled out of Cuba itself, grown fresh in Nicaraguan soil.

Craig's still building. Just this year, he brought on Christopher Mey — who spent years running international business for Rocky Patel — to take Esteban Carreras global. Twenty years in, and the man's still expanding.

One of the team will be at Tobaccodoches this October, bringing that whole world with them. 🔥

The Birdcage takes the back lounge tonight — and after that 13-12 nail-biter of a vote, we're glad this one's finally happening. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a good one. If you have, you already know why it won.

He was 22 when his own father told him no. 💙

Three generations of Rodriguez men had already built something real by then — started in 1956, when Ramón "Pulita" Rodriguez began hand-rolling ci**rs in his backyard in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. His son Osvaldo grew it into something bigger. Then his grandson Ram had an idea for a brand built for the US market, and his father wasn't convinced enough to fund it.

So Ram did it himself. Used the money he'd already earned working at the family factory to buy ci**rs from his own dad, at full price, and built the thing on his own terms. First year, he sold 7,500 ci**rs. That's it. That's where it started.

He renamed the brand Artista — because in his words, everyone who makes a cigar is an artist. It's grown toward a million ci**rs a year since, and even landed a collaboration with David Ortiz along the way. Not bad for a kid his own father didn't believe in yet.

Y'all already know Big Tony. He's brought a few different brands through this lounge over the years, and this October he's bringing Artista to Tobaccodoches. 🔥

Every business needs a name people remember. Back in 1905, this town had six of them. 🔥

Senate Chamber. Challenge. Dictator. Morse-all-Texas. Red Field. Old Stone Fort. Six different ci**rs, all coming out of one factory, all trying to make Nacogdoches to***co mean something.

It worked well enough that a second cigar company opened up right here in town not long after — a man named Harry Wilson, one of the original shareholders, striking out to build something called Bonita. Two factories. One small East Texas town. All in the same handful of years.

That's not something you hear about a place this size. We think it says something about Nacogdoches then, and honestly, about it now. 💙

He was a lawyer in LA before any of this. 💙

Rakesh "Rocky" Patel was born in New Delhi, raised in Wisconsin, and spent the early '90s practicing entertainment law — the kind of job that had him hanging around movie sets, which is exactly where he got introduced to premium ci**rs. He fell in with a crowd at the Grand Havana Club that included Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, and Harrison Ford. That's the world he was living in when he decided to walk away from it.

In 1999, he sold his entire law practice to start Indian Tabac Cigar Co. His first trip to Honduras, by his own account, was "the Wild West" — a country still recovering from war, one of his own local partners firing a gun through the sunroof of his car just to make a point. He credits his grandfather back in India, who taught him about growing things long before to***co ever entered the picture, for the patience it took to stick it out.

Today Rocky Patel Ci**rs is one of the largest operations in the industry. Still built on a decision made by a guy who used to argue contracts for a living.

Patrick is bringing that whole story to Tobaccodoches this October — Rocky Patel's first year joining us. Come meet him. 🔥

This round pulled in more votes than any Movie Night we've done — and it ended in a flat-out tie. Jeremiah Johnson and The Birdcage are neck and neck, with Mars Attacks trailing right behind close enough to sting.

Move-in weekend is here, and Nacogdoches is about to get a whole lot livelier. 🎉

To every parent hauling boxes up three flights of stairs, saying goodbye in a dorm parking lot, and driving home to a much quieter house — we see you. That's a lot to carry in one weekend.

If you need a minute before that drive back, or you just want somewhere quiet to sit with a good cigar and let it settle, we're right here. No rush, no agenda. Just a chair and a little peace before the road.
