Ed Swanson opened Cuthills Vineyard in Pierce, Nebraska in 1994 and what followed was nothing short of a movement. He didn’t just make wine. He helped build an entire industry from the ground up, mentoring nearly every winemaker who came after him, including Tim and Greg Nollette, brothers and owners of Niobrara Valley Vineyards.

Ed championed the cold climate varieties that put the Nebraska in Nebraska wines.

But Ed didn’t just grow grapes. He made them. Ed bred his own cold climate hybrid varieties — crossing riparia rootstock with classic wine grapes and cold-hardy cultivars to engineer vines that could survive Nebraska’s -20° winters. He was a scientist, a farmer, and a visionary all at once.

You know Brianna? That tropical, honey-kissed white that shows up at every Nebraska winery? Ed named it — and helped define how to grow it right. You know why Nebraska growers lean so hard into Frontenac, St. Croix, and La Crosse? Because Ed proved they could thrive here.

The Book of Ed isn’t a manual. It’s a legacy. And every glass of Nebraska wine you pour has a little of his chapter in it. 🍷🌾
