Meet John, owner of Smokers Haven, resident problem fixer, peacekeeper, and the big boss around here. He also happens to be our head cook when it’s time for an event, so if you’ve ever enjoyed a good meal at the shop, you can thank him for that, too.🧑‍🍳

After more than 50 years of working in everything from retail and construction to landscaping and bartending, you could say he’s picked up a thing or two along the way. One of his best talents is remembering what customers like, sometimes even when they can’t remember it themselves. He also loves getting new merchandise in the shop and seeing customers’ reactions when they get their hands on the latest and greatest. Just be prepared for a dad joke or two along the way.

He might describe himself as caring, thoughtful, and a little quiet, but those of us who know him know he’s usually taking everything in and thinking things through before he speaks. He’s also shared that in more than 50 years of working, he’s never had to fill out a job application. We’ll let you draw your own conclusions about that one!

And then there’s Jen, his wife and partner in all of this. When asked what stands out after all these years, she talked about the wonderful customers and industry friends they’ve met along the way. She also fondly remembers the medical and legal advice customers have shared over the years, which, as she’ll tell you, has actually come in handy! You never quite know what kind of connection or unexpected advice you’ll find when you walk through the door.

More than 50 years in business means a lot of ci**rs, a lot of stories, a lot of dad jokes, and a whole lot of relationships built along the way. We’re grateful for the people who have made Smokers Haven what it is today, and for these two continuing to make this place feel like family.

Meet Dale, one of our sales associates and the resident to***co man at Smokers Haven.

Dale keeps our pre-bagged pipe to***co weighed out and ready for customers who need to grab their favorite blend and get on with their day. But his talents go well beyond to***co. He’s our resident storyteller, always ready with a tale from his days running a dry cleaner, traveling as a jewelry salesman, or collecting wisdom over his 83 years on this planet. If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, Dale can make sure you’re never short on conversation.

When it comes to favorites, Dale is a fan of the My Father Blue cigar. But nothing quite lights him up like a fresh delivery of pipe to***co waiting to be weighed out. Around the shop, you might also hear him referred to as the “Old Fart,” the “Ice Man,” or the “2oz To***co Man.” We’ll let you decide which nickname fits best.

Here’s a fun fact you might not expect: Dale played football for the University of Texas and remains a proud Longhorn fan, even surrounded by all those Red Raiders here in Lubbock. We’ll give him a pass on that one.

Calm, cool, and occasionally catching a few Zs when things slow down, Dale brings plenty of stories and personality to Smokers Haven. Stop by, say hello, ask him a question, and give him a few minutes. Chances are you’ll leave with a cigar, some pipe to***co, and a story you didn’t walk in expecting to hear.

Now it’s time for me to introduce myself - my name is Dana, and I’m known for being the Marketing and Communications Strategist, and according to Brian, the Chief Perspective Officer.💁🏼‍♀️

I’ve spent my life growing up around cigar shop culture, taking it all in, and watching Smokers Haven grow and evolve over the years. One of the coolest parts has been getting to witness the business change alongside our family. We’ve all grown up, changed, and found our own ways to contribute, and while family business certainly isn’t always easy, building something authentic with these people is something I haven’t grown tired of yet.

I’ve always been drawn to the moments that make Smokers Haven special: the community, the laughter, the friendships, and the camaraderie that happen when people come together over a shared interest. Back in middle school, I was the one running around with my little digital camera, taking pictures of whatever was happening at the shop. These days, that same instinct has turned into managing our social media across platforms, capturing the people and moments that make this place what it is.

I now live full-time in Austin, but Smokers Haven has always been a part of my story. Getting to help share its story with the community, highlight the people who make it special, and preserve a little piece of our family history along the way means a lot to me.

Family businesses aren’t always easy, but there’s something special about building one with the people you love. I’m grateful I get to be part of it, even from a few hours down the road.

And apparently, I’m now in charge of making everyone else look good on the internet. Someone has to do it!✨

Meet Cody, our sales associate, resident pipe guy, and somehow still the new guy around here!

Cody brings more than 20 years of cigar knowledge to Smokers Haven, along with an upbeat personality, a good sense of humor, and plenty of conversation. But ci**rs aren’t his only specialty. He’s become our go-to guy for pipe to***co, constantly working on new blends that have quickly become customer favorites. If you’re a pipe smoker, there’s a good chance he has something worth trying.

Cody’s connection to Smokers Haven goes back a long way. He bought his first pipe at our original mall location years ago, long before he joined the team. And in true Smokers Haven fashion, the shop has played a pretty big role in his personal life, too. He met his wife here and eventually proposed to her during one of our cigar events. You could say Smokers Haven has been part of his story for a while!

Whether he’s talking ci**rs, experimenting with a new pipe to***co blend, or making people laugh around the shop, Cody brings plenty of energy and personality to the team. Stop by, say hello, and ask him what he’s been blending lately. Just don’t be surprised if the “new guy” knows a whole lot more than you expected.

Say hello to JD, another one of our sales associates at Smokers Haven and a familiar face who has been part of the shop for about 15 years.

JD is known for his legendary customer service and his ability to read the room and figure out what will make someone’s experience better. Whether you’re looking for a cigar recommendation, exploring pipe to***co, or just stopping by for a friendly card game and some conversation, JD knows how to make people feel welcome.

After 15 years in the business, JD says it’s not necessarily the new merchandise that gets him excited. It’s seeing a customer’s reaction when they finally get to try something they’ve been wanting to experience. For him, it’s about the people and helping them get the most out of their time at Smokers Haven.

JD describes himself as a chameleon who can adapt to the room and figure out what’s missing to make the experience better. He’ll also tell you he’s an open book, sometimes to a fault, so if you have a question, just ask. Whether you’re looking for something new or just good company, he’ll help you feel right at home.

Meet Brian, one of the people helping shape the next chapter of Smokers Haven.

Since taking on a full-time role at the shop, Brian has become a familiar face to our customers and an active part of building relationships throughout the Lubbock community. He handles daily operations, inventory management, purchasing, and projections, and he’s also our resident technology guy. From implementing our TORO Cigar POS system to using sales data to make smarter inventory decisions, he’s always looking for ways to keep the shop running well and bring something new to the table.

Brian is always on the lookout for rare releases and hard-to-find ci**rs. Fuente Rare Pinks and Añejos, Drew Estate’s Tres Serpientes, CAO Amazon Basin, and LFD’s Andalusian Bull are just a few that get his attention. If there’s something special out there, he’s probably already trying to figure out how to get it into our humidor.

If you’ve met Brian, there’s a decent chance he’s introduced himself as a bastard. 😝 There’s a story behind that, and it’s just one example of the humor and honesty he brings to the people he meets. He’s also been in recovery for over 15 months, something he’s proud of and grateful for. Working in the cigar industry while navigating a world where alcohol is often part of the social scene comes with its own challenges, and he appreciates the friends and industry relationships that have supported him along the way.

Brian is detail-oriented, community-minded, and dedicated, and he brings a lot to Smokers Haven both in how the business runs and in the relationships he continues to build. And as his sister, I might be a little biased, but he’s also the best big brother out there. One of the perks of running our social media is getting to brag on him a little. 🫶✨
