Happy Loon Fact Friday!

Floating nest rafts can help loons successfully raise their young. These platforms rise and fall with changing water levels, offering a more stable nesting site when heavy rains, flooding, predators, or human disturbance threaten natural nests. At the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, nest rafts are one tool used to support loon recovery, including efforts to help restore populations affected by the Bouchard Barge 120 oil spill in Buzzards Bay. Some rafts also feature avian guards, which help shield eggs from predators and reduce disturbances from nearby recreational activity.

While nest rafts can make a big difference, they aren’t the right solution for every lake or nesting pair. Their placement must carefully consider wind, waves, boat traffic, and nearby loon territories, since adding nesting sites can sometimes increase territorial conflicts and actually lead to a decrease in productivity.

Rafts also need proper construction, natural nesting materials, and regular monitoring to ensure they remain safe and suitable for loons. Because poorly designed rafts can do more harm than good, homemade versions are not recommended. If you think loons on your lake could benefit from a nest raft, contact ACLC at [email protected]!
