Some objects you buy to use. This one you buy to keep.

Brizard & Co. brought S.T. Dupont, Arturo Fuente and Maccarrone into one lighter, and the result is a first: no S.T. Dupont lighter before this has carried hand cut marquetry. The front panel is burl walnut and tulipwood, assembled by hand into one continuous pattern, with the OpusX emblem in 24k gold and red lacquer sitting on top. The rest is pure Dupont, gold finish, diamond head guilloche, hinged cap, flint wheel.

Ninety nine numbered pieces in black. Each arrives with its numbered plaque, certificate, ostrich pouch, embroidered OpusX pouch and presentation box, so the set stays complete for whoever inherits it.

A serious anniversary, milestone or retirement gift, or the centerpiece of a collection.

Here is what most people get wrong when they buy a case. A cigar travel case is not one product, it is four.

One cigar for an afternoon wants a tube. Two or three for a dinner or a round wants a hard leather case like these. A weekend wants a travel humidor that holds a humidification puck. A week away wants a full traveler with slots for the cutter and lighter.

And the measurement almost nobody checks: ring gauge. A standard three finger case is built around a 50 to 54 ring. A 60 ring gordo will not fit, and forcing it splits wrappers.

Byron turned 175 this year, and Selected To***co marked it with something more interesting than a single anniversary cigar.

The 175 Tribute Set puts one cigar from each chapter of the brand's story into a single display package: the 19th Century Grand Poemas, the 20th Century Habaneros, the 21st Century Elegantes, and the Seleccion 1850. Each is sealed in its own aluminum tube. All four are handcrafted in Costa Rica under an Ecuadorian wrapper, and every one of them rested at least four years after rolling before it was allowed out. Two of the tubes carry Reserva 5 Anos.

Nelson Alfonso's line is that time is the greatest ingredient, and it shows up in the smoke rather than the marketing. These burn quietly. Cedar to start, then a dark fruit sweetness, raisin and caramel through the middle, a little black pepper underneath.

These are released in strictly limited numbers to appointed Byron merchants, so this is not something we can reorder on request. If you have been meaning to get to know Byron, this is the clearest single way in.

The complete Brizard Augusta and Golf Heritage collection, photographed piece by piece.

Augusta green leather, Tineo wood, white piping. A desktop humidor, the Havana Traveler, the Show Band case, three cutters, two lighters and a punch. It was built as one family, which means the thing in your pocket actually matches the one sitting on your desk, and if you have ever tried to assemble a set like this one accessory at a time you know how rarely that works out.

We also put up a new guide today that this collection sits right in the middle of. Short version: the USGA says the average round of golf is now four hours and thirty minutes, and a Churchill gives you about ninety minutes. One cigar has never covered eighteen holes. Nobody says that out loud, and it changes how you pack the bag.

Four decisions. That is the whole thing.

Size, wrapper, strength, format. Get those four right and the cigar suits the person and the hour. Everything else, price included, follows from them.

The short version: size is really time, a robusto or toro runs about 45 to 75 minutes while a mini gives you the same ritual in 20. Wrapper is where much of the flavor lives, Connecticut shade leans pale and creamy, maduro goes darker and sweeter. Strength is not flavor, a cigar can be full of flavor and still be mild, which is exactly what a first cigar should be. And format is just honesty about what you know: a single is a test, a sampler is an education, a box is a commitment.

The one in the photo is the Oliva Serie V Melanio Edicion Ano 2024, a 5.5 x 60 Gran Toro, Ecuadorian Sumatra over aged Nicaraguan to***co, medium to full, leather and coffee and pepper with that creamy Melanio finish. Oliva lined the boxes with sheet music because French pianist Paul Montag composed a 45 minute piece while smoking one. We have seen a lot of packaging. This one earned it.
