Last week on the Podcast we hosted Marlene Holmes, Master Distiller of 🥃🔥

Marlene has an incredible story. Growing up in Kentucky, she loved to farm and fish. Knowing nothing about distillation, she heard of an opening at Jim Beam to feed their catfish daily, as they were doing an experiment with feeding them distillers grain. She went to the distillery and met with Booker Noe about the position, as he also loved fish and this was his little side project. We’re sure you can see where this is going…

Marlene became fascinated with distillation and ended up working as a distiller at Beam for 28 years, starting directly under and learning from Booker Noe. She was approached by Milam and Greene to help start and grow their distillery and made the big change of moving to Texas and is thriving!

Marlene was named 2024 Master Distiller of the Year and was recently inducted into The Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. It was a treat to have her on the show and this is absolutely worth the listen, their whiskey is also absolutely worth the try. What an incredible honor to host for our Masterclass last night. This event was two years in the making and couldn’t have been timed better to sneak preview the first barrel pick of Gem of Kentucky Bourbon for Illinois.

‼️ We will be releasing a very limited quantity from that barrel next week, after wraps up their pre-sale, so stay tuned for that post! ‼️

Dixon’s family has been in the industry for five generations, dating all the way back to 1879 when Charles Dedman started . Dixon built an incredible business with and focused on curated whiskey tastings decades ago when none of the distilleries had visitor experiences. We attended one of his blind tastings five years ago at The Inn, which was the inspiration to start hosting our blinds here at the store.

These tastings, along with his legacy and connections, led him to eventually revive the Kentucky Owl brand before stepping away from that to start something he can entirely call his own, which is 2XO. Two Times Oak, he’s mastered and is fascinated with the art of maturation and re-introducing new oak to already aged bourbon, for a bigger and bolder pour. The inside info we got last night was incredible.

We’re running a hot sale price right now on his Sneakerhead Blend, from 99.99 down to 74.99, and once we get down to the last case it’ll come off sale.

Next week’s Masterclass is sold out, but the following week we’re hosting the Master Distiller of MGP/Ross and Squibb, and the Owner/Founder of Old Louisville. Both events are not ones to miss (We’ll also be previewing barrel picks at both) and just about sold out, so grab your spot ASAP!

1792 Full Proof Single Barrel Bourbon 🥃 🔥

Distilled and aged 7 Years by Barton Distillery. Selected and bottled at 125 Proof 🎉

This was picked by a Sazerac lottery winner who’s part of ACBS, and approved by us. They ran the barrel through the store and half the barrel is gone already for the pick team and the club. We’d highly recommend snagging some if you’re a 1792 Full Proof fan, it’s much better than the standard shelf offering.

Some of these picks can just be hot and unpleasant, this one does not fall under that mark whatsoever. The nose is sweet and inviting and reminiscent of warm buttered corn bread. The palate is very approachable for its 125 proof point and immediately warms you up with notes of dark fruit, black cherry, Tiramisu, nuttiness, creamy vanilla buttercream, caramel sauce, and a hint of wood sugar & oak that come through on the finish, which seems to linger and fade with a gentle rye spice.

It’s now available online or in-store while supplies last, and it’ll be pouring at the bar tomorrow when that opens at noon. We’ll update this post once it sells out, cheers! 🦅🥃🎉
