“In 1753, Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded Shenk’s distillery, which was later renamed Bomberger’s Distillery in the 1800s before having its name changed once again to Michter’s Distillery in the mid-20th Century. It is this great heritage that we honor with the release of Bomberger’s Declaration and Shenk’s Homestead which comprise our Michter’s Legacy Series.

This 2026 release of Bomberger’s features the wh***ey’s hallmark Chinquapin oak, coupled with the addition of Hungarian oak, thereby creating an intriguing, rich chocolate decadence around the cherry and spice attributes characteristic of Chinquapin. Both types of oak were naturally seasoned and air dried for three years with a custom toast and char. The result is a bold, expressive journey of a complex cherry profile underscored by baking spice, toasted pecans, butter toffee, and luxurious layers of chocolate, all supported by a silky texture at 108 proof.

This year’s Shenk’s recipe includes caramel malted barley, which offers a caramel bread pudding note to balance the beautiful spice notes of the rye. Some of the wh***ey was finished in toasted only French Oak barrels that were not charred. This wood was sourced from the Vosges region of France before being naturally air dried and seasoned for 24 months and being toasted to our exacting specifications. The cooperage also includes 60-month air dried American oak, which imparts a special character to this release. This year’s release opens with notes of graham cracker, caramel, and spice, transitioning to stone fruit and a balanced interplay of spice and sweetness through the lingering finish.”

We snuck these onto the bar last week and people are LOVING them. The Bourbon is the same code we released about a month ago, but they let this one age a bit longer to hit 10 years. The Rye is a totally new code and soooo good, almost tasting over oaked at just 7 years old!

🥃 Rare Character 7 Year Barrel Proof Kentucky Rye R80-020 SiB 118.86 Proof

Who stole whose barrel? Gold Eagle & LCWC sat down with the team at Rare Character to pick our bourbon barrels. After we picked they let us try this fun rye they haven’t introduced anywhere yet, and we both absolutely loved it. We were told we couldn’t pick the Rye AND each pick a Bourbon, so we went with our original Bourbon selections. A few days later Rare Character reached out with the news that the rye we loved was actually up for grabs, so we snagged it!

It’s distilled in Kentucky with 80% Rye, 12% Corn, 8% Malted Barley and aged in new charred oak. It’s super mellow up front, we’d never ping this as being a younger rye. It builds and builds with most of the complexity coming through on the back end. Notes of dried oak, caramelized sugar, watermelon, sweet apple, honey, spearmint, and clove with a long, warming finish.

🥃 Rare Character 10 Year Barrel Proof Kentucky Bourbon KHR-117 SiB 116.34 Proof

It’s distilled in Kentucky with 60% Corn, 36% Rye, and 4% Malted Barley. Notes of peaches, stone fruit, vanilla buttercream, wood sugars, cedar, and baking spices. It’s super fruity up front and then spicy and decadent on the back end. If you liked our last pick, you’re going to love this one.
