La Aroma de Cuba Monarch — 6 x 52 Toro

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf (maduro)

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan and Honduran

Strength: Medium to Full

Factory and Maker: My Father Ci**rs, Estélí, Nicaragua — blended by Don Pepín García for Ashton; a partnership between the Levin family and the García family La Aroma de Cuba is an old name — a pre-embargo Cuban brand with real history behind it. What makes the modern version matter is who Ashton handed it to. The Levin family brought the brand back and put the blend in Don Pepín García's hands, and the García family has been rolling it in Estélí ever since.

When the people who built My Father are making a cigar under somebody else's name, pay
attention.

The Monarch is the 6 x 52 toro, and it's the size most people land on once they've tried the box. The wrapper is Connecticut Broadleaf — not Ecuadorian, not San Andrés, actual Broadleaf out of the Connecticut River Valley.

That leaf is thick, dark, and takes a long fermentation, and it brings a
particular kind of sweetness: dark chocolate, espresso crema, molasses, with a woody backbone underneath instead of the raisin-and-fig profile you get from Mexican maduro.
Underneath, a Nicaraguan binder and a Nicaraguan-Honduran filler do something smart. The Nicaraguan leaf brings the pepper and the earth, and the Honduran smooths the transitions and adds a nutty, almost leathery middle register.

The result is a cigar that starts with cocoa and black pepper, settles into coffee and sweet cedar through the middle third, and finishes earthy and long with a clean spice that never turns harsh.
Medium to full, and that is accurate — this one has body without punishing you. Give it an hour and a
quarter and don't rush it.

Broadleaf burns slow by nature, and the toro gives the blend room to turn over two or three times before you're done.
A Pepín blend on a Broadleaf wrapper at this price is one of the quieter bargains in the humidor. Come find out why it never leaves our shelf.

NUB México

Wrapper: Mexican — grown in the San Andrés Valley, Veracruz

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Strength: Medium, with a touch of spice

Factory and Maker: Tabacalera Oliva S.A. (TABOLISA), Estélí, Nicaragua — Oliva Cigar Co.

This is the first brand-new NUb in years, and Oliva went to Mexico for it. If you know the NUb story, you know the whole idea: Sam Leccia argued that the sweet spot of a cigar — that stretch where the flavors finally lock in and the smoke gets full — sits a couple of inches up from the foot, and most people are smoking an inch and a half of warm-up to get there. So NUb cut out the warm-up. Four inches, fat ringgauge, and you are in the sweet spot from the second puff.

Putting a Mexican wrapper on that frame is a smart move. San Andrés leaf is thick, oily and dark, and it brings a flavor nobody mistakes for Nicaraguan or Ecuadorian — dark cocoa, black coffee, a sweet earthiness and that distinctive dusty-pepper bite on the back of the palate. Under it, all-Nicaraguan binder and filler out of Oliva's own fields keep the body balanced and give the San Andrés something sturdy to lean on instead of letting it go bitter.

Expect cocoa and espresso right away, a sweet cedar and baking-spice note through the middle, and a finish that turns earthy with a clean pepper kick. Oliva calls it medium in body and slightly spicy, and that reads honest — it is rich without wearing you out, which is exactly what you want from a short smoke. Call it forty-five minutes to an hour. The 460 is the classic NUb nub; the 464T is a stubby pointed torpedo that narrows the draw and concentrates everything — and that one you can only get here in the States.

Wooden slide-lid boxes of 24, with artwork drawn from ancient Aztec design. If you've got a short lunch break or a drive home and you still want a real cigar, this is the one.

Warped Isla del Cocodrilo

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano, desflorado (deflorada) selection

Binder: Two — Ecuadorian Habano 2000 and Brazilian Arapiraca

Filler: Nicaraguan long filler

Strength: Medium to Medium-Full

Factory and Maker: Tabacalera La Isla, Dominican

The name is the first clue. “Isla del Cocodrilo” — Island of the Crocodile — is what Cubans call their
own island, because on a map that is exactly what the shape looks like. Kyle Gellis builds ci**rs that
are love letters to a specific idea, and this one is pointed squarely at the old-world Cuban profile withoutpretending to be Cuban.

The construction is where it gets interesting, and it is not a detail most blenders would bother with.
There are two binders in this cigar: Ecuadorian Habano 2000 and Brazilian Arapiraca, wrapped
together under a desflorado Ecuadorian Habano.

Desflorado means the flowering tops are cut off the plant before they bloom, forcing the energy back down into the leaf — more oil, more sugar, morecharacter, and a much lower yield per plant. Add a dual binder on top of that and you have a cigar thatis deliberately expensive and difficult to make.

You taste the reason for it. The first third comes in dry and savory — cinnamon, cedar smoke, a saline
edge and cut grass. Through the middle the Brazilian Arapiraca shows up and does the heavy lifting:wholegrain toast, star anise and clove, and that cinnamon graham cracker sweetness people keep bringing up in reviews, salted just enough to keep it from going dessert-sweet.

The last third turns earthy and warm — brown sugar, rich soil, black and white pepper, vanilla baking spice. Medium to medium-full, with real depth rather than raw power.

One to***conist's note: a dual-binder cigar carries more leaf through the middle, so smoke it slow and don't over-puff it. Let the coal do the work and the back half stays as good as the front.
Warped releases are small and they do not come back around.

BLACK WORKS STUDIO:CULTURE VULTURE

Most barber poles are a two-leaf parlor trick. The Culture Vulture is three, and that is the whole point.

James Brown wound Ecuadorian Maduro, Connecticut-seed and Candela together into a single spiralthat fades dark to green as your eye travels up the stick — the most ambitious piece of construction BLK WKS has attempted, and the kind of thing only a roller who has been at Oveja Negra a long time can actually close up without a seam opening.

The look earns its keep because the blend genuinely moves. Under an Ecuadorian Habano binder and Nicaraguan filler, each turn of the spiral brings a different leaf to the coal, so the cigar does not just sit on one note. Early on the Maduro leads — dark cocoa, scorched sugar, a cedar edge.

Through themiddle the Connecticut-seed cools the center and widens it out with cream and a soft bread sweetness.Then the Candela creeps in and does what only Candela does: a bright, grassy, almost tea-like lift that cuts the richness and keeps the back half from going heavy. Medium to full, but the strength shows up as depth rather than a punch to the chest.

Brown has said it plainly: “For me, the visual identity and the cigar itself must work together—they're both part of telling the story.” BLK WKS is the experimental arm of Black Label Trading Co., the place where the wild ideas get tried, and this is that philosophy in one cigar.
