‘CERVO’ BARBERA
NORTHRIDGE VINEYARD
WAHLUKE SLOPE, WA

ViNO CasaSmith is a collection of Washington wines produced from classic varietals of Italy. ViNO was created in 2010 with the inaugural release of the single-vineyard Pinot Grigio from Ancient Lakes, later joined by Sangiovese RosĂ©, Rosso Red Blend, and Moscato. CasaSmith joined as a new brand in 2012 focusing on single-vineyard red varietals (Barbera, Primitivo, and Sangiovese) while keeping up with the vision of producing Italian varietals with the same integrity as they would be produced in Italy. Italian inspired, Washington produced.

Northridge Vineyard (100%)
Loamy, fine sand over silica limestone, these ancient soils above the Missoula Flood plain are some of the best to grow fruit. This site is higher elevation and has cooler evenings, which creates later ripening, lots of minerality, and concentration.

Pretty aromas of lavender, plums and blueberries with a touch of wet earth and rosemary stems. It’s medium-to-full bodied with sappy blue & black fruits, beautiful freshness and a minty streak that leads to a long & juicy finish.

HOUSE OF BROWN
RED BLEND
LODI, CA 2022

The Brown family have been in Napa since 1980. Siblings Deneen, Coral, and David began making wine in 1996. Raised by two medical professionals in a “Blue-Zone” household in Southern California, they all pitched in at their parents’ medical clinic. There, they adopted what would become a guiding principle in their wine business: Do no harm.

The creation of House of Brown was inspired by an extraordinary community of wine consumers who for over two decades had been finding themselves at home (and at ease) with Brown Estate, and in 2017 began assembling at the family’s then newly opened Brown Downtown Napa tasting room. House of Brown is 100% family-owned + 100% Black-owned, and the brand is women-led.

This red is an unusual blend of 50% cabernet, 25% pinot noir, and 25% Tempranillo grapes from Lodi, California. it’s certainly delightful, easy drinking & crushable red that is even better with a little chill on it.

Light body and crisp acidity meet lush fruit and spices. Leads with aromas of hibiscus tea, dried rose petal, pomegranate, and Maraschino cherry with subtle cinnamon, clove, and spiced plums. Intense flavors of dried cranberry & ripe raspberry make for a fleshy & fruit filled mid with lingering spice notes on the finish.

PICK OF THE WEEK

DOMAINE ST. PATRICE
CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE
VIEILLES VIGNES, 2020

Back in the 1930s, the Clos St Patrice vineyard was known as one of the best plots in the region. The clos is now also among the oldest monopole vineyards in ChĂąteauneuf-du-Pape. The plot covers 1.8 hectares and is planted with old grenache and mourvĂšdre vines. The grapes for the other Cotes-du-Rhone come from different lieux-dits, including CabriĂšre, Le Pied Long, Les Terres Blanches, Les gallimardes and Les Marines. The soil consists of sand with white clay and is covered with red cobbles. All plots are farmed organically. After the manual harvest, about 20% of the bunches are destemmed.

In 2009, Guy Julien and his son JérÎme took over the estate. For the first five years, they sold their wines to a local négociant, but that changed in 2014 when Samuel Montgermont started working with the Juliens. He was so impressed by the wines and therefore felt it was time to bottle and release them themselves.
The 2020 is a blend of mostly old-vine Grenache, with a chunk of Mourvedre & a splash of Syrah. 40% are whole clusters, fermentation takes place in concrete vats & is aged in a combination of concrete & old foudre. Wines are bottled in the Spring & aged in the cellar for an additional year before being released.

Darkly colored in the glass, the aromas are warm & welcoming with a beautiful raspberry scented perfume, complimented by layers of savory plums, blueberries, violet, sage & tapenade. Rich, round & perfectly balanced in the mouth, the flavors are deep & purely fruited. There is weighty volume on the mid-palate that glides effortlessly into a deliciously long & velvety finish.

CHATEAU BONNET
BORDEAUX BLANC
ENTRE-DEUX-MERS

In the middle of the 17th century, the Lurton’s ancestors were millers in the parish of Saint-Laurent-des Combes, not far from the famous village of Saint-Émilion, and were already cultivating, in their spare time, a few plots of vines for their own consumption.

At a time when the vineyards of Bordeaux were suffering from the onslaught of phylloxera, and many overwhelmed owners were selling their properties, LĂ©once RĂ©capet, Andre Lurton’s great grandfather, bought, hoping for better days. In 1897, he acquired Chateau Bonnet in GrĂ©zillac, with its 47 hectares of land, vines and meadows.

The 2023 Bordeaux Blanc is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Semillon & small amounts of Colombard & Muscadelle. The nose is bright & fresh, dominated by the character of the Sauvignon. The notes of white nectarine, passionfruit & citrus blend harmoniously with the floral notes. The palate is round and unctuous - accompanied by notes of lemon-lime & grapefruit, a lovely freshness balances the palate & leads to a long & mouthwatering finish.

TWENTY ROWS
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
NORTH COAST

Brian and Lori Nuss founded Vinoce from high above the valley floor on Mt. Veeder in 1996. Over the last three decades, they have developed an intimate knowledge of growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the rugged, hillside slopes. Vinoce is devoted to creating wines that reflect the true expressions of Mount Veeder with balance, power, and uniqueness.

Their second label, Twenty Rows, was created as an homage to the first vineyard block they planted in Napa Valley. Those wines are made from Vinoce hillside ineyards and from vineyards on the valley floor, owned by close friends of the family.

The mountain fruit provides velvety tannins and aromas, and flavors of cherry and black pepper with a hint of herbs. The valley floor fruit complements with cherry, plum, and dark fruit flavors. The nose displays aromas of bright black cherries, followed by dusty cocoa and roasting coffee beans. Dense texture and a fine sense of balance enhance the flavors of blackberry, currants, vanilla bean and dark chocolate.

SIDURI
WILLAMETTE VALLEY
PINOT NOIR

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is ideal for cool climate grapes thanks to the Cascade Mountains on the east, the Coast Range on the west, and a series of lower hill chains on the extreme north. The resulting Pinot Noirs are some of our most graceful, with red fruits, a warm clay character and crisp acidity.

The 2022 Siduri Willamette Valley Pinot Noir comes from vineyards in two distinctive appellations within the Willamette Valley: Yamhill-Carlton and Eola-Amity - plus a third vineyard in the Southern Willamette Valley, Maple Grove, that adds structure and richness. These three areas all bring different attributes to the blend and give us a broad range of flavors, accented by spice and earth notes, that blend to create a complex wine that is simultaneously rich and zippy. This vibrant Pinot Noir offers aromas of cranberry, sage and boysenberry. Bright, fresh acidity hits the palate with flavors of red plum and tea leaf. Juicy, modest texture in the mid-palate with delicate tannins.

BLUE ROCK
BABY BLUE ROSÉ

Blue Rock Vineyard, owned and operated by Kenny Kahn, is a small artisanal winery in Alexander Valley that produces high quality, hand-crafted, Bordeaux-inspired wines and Pinot Noir from Sonoma County grapes.

Blue Rock currently has 46 acres of vineyards planted with five Bordeaux varietals and three acres of hillside Syrah. The vineyards are densely planted with low-yielding vines and are managed following sustainable agricultural practices. The Kahn’s added another thirty acres of land, 25 planted to Pinot Noir in the Petaluma Gap.

The Petit Verdot, Merlot & Malbec come from the Blue Rock estate vineyard in Alexander Valley and the Pinot Noir from Gapstone Vineyard in The Petaluma Gap. It has a beautiful dusty pink color. It opens with bright & intense aromas of watermelon sorbet, freshly picked strawberries and mineral notes of wet stone. The palate is lively & energetic, showcasing flavors of unsweetened dried cranberry, wild strawberry, tangy kiwi, orange zest and pink sea salt, finishing with tart, yet balanced, acidity . It is refreshing, full of verve, light on its feet and satisfying on every level!

PICK OF THE WEEK

MARIETTA CELLARS
OLD VINE RANCH
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2023

Marietta farms over 400 acres of their own vines. The wines of Old Vine Ranch represent an authentic blend of tradition and creative spirit. Building on the fifty-year legacy of Old Vine Red (one of the first wines I personally started buying on a consistent basis) each sip is a journey through California’s rich winemaking heritage. Carefully grown and crafted to be an easy indulgence and everyday celebration, these wines celebrate the fabulous diversity and quality of California’s vineyards.

The 2023 growing season was marked by a late start and relatively cool conditions, culminating in what many growers and vintners are hailing as a standout year for quality. Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon is bold & rich with lovely notes of spice & oak wrapped around a core of black currant. It’s plump, rich & fleshy with gobs of dark currant & black cherry fruit with accents of dark chocolate, to***co, green peppercorn & spice. Remarkably deep for this price point & certainly ready to handle a steak, it’s juicy enough for solo sipping or pairing with pizza. Easily one of our new favorite wines in the shop.
