PINOT BLANC
ALSACE, FRANCE

Alsace enjoys a great diversity of terroirs and landscapes. Gifted for its vine culture, it is blessed with a dry and temperate climate, complex geology, favorable soils and an ideal exposure for its vineyards. Its geographical situation at a crossroads of Germanic and Roman influences, also tells a story: that of a culture fostered at the very outset by the Romans and perpetuated since by impassioned winegrowers.

The Pinot Blanc grapes are harvested from diverse hillside vineyards around the little village of Bergheim, with a predominance of heavy soils compound by clay and limestone. Each vineyard is picked separately, over two to three days. Wines are made in separate lots, then blended before transferred to large (old) oak casks for a period of six months, wines are then transferred back to stainless steel vats before being bottled.

The 2023 opens with bright & intense aromatics of white flowers, stone fruits, citrus & spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with an airy & juicy freshness to the apricot, green pear, peach skin & spiced citrus notes. It is beautifully balanced; bone dry & finishes with a refreshing lemon squeeze & crushed rock minerality.

SAINT LAURENT ROSÉ
PFALZ, GERMANY

In 1990 Annette Borell & Thomas Diehl married and created Borell-Diehl by joining their families’ three wineries into one. Starting with a total of 5 hectares, they have since expanded to 35 hectares of vineyards, all within 5km of Hainfeld, about 1/2 hour drive from Deidesheim.

Annette & Thomas’ oldest son George has taken over leadership at the estate. Having staged at important wineries like Rebholz (Pfalz) Wittmann (Rheinhessen), and Von Volxem (Saar), as well as an internship in New Zealand in 2016, he continues the winery’s focus on quality wines of extraordinary value. In addition, no systemic pesticides or herbicides are used and there is no irrigation in the vineyards.

Saint Laurent is an Austrian grape that is thought to be a cross of pinot noir and savagnin. It typically makes dark, rather aggressive & rustic red wines; however, it makes a wonderfully bright and flavorful rosé! This offering is full of vivid red cherry fruit and a core of summer melon & peach notes with intensely vibrant acidity and a freshness that is mouth-watering & crushable.

As fourth generation winemakers and farmers, Carlo and Dante Mondavi attribute a great deal of what they have learned to their grandfather Robert and father Tim, both whom influenced them from a young age. They consider their father their first teacher in beyond-organic farming, an approach they’ve followed as a family of farmers for decades, and Carlo and Dante consider themselves ‘winegrowers’ rather than winemakers.

Carlo and the RAEN team began the Monarch Challenge in 2016, Inspired by the migration of the Monarch butterfly, as an effort to bring awareness to clean farming practices, with the vision of a future of farming in Sonoma, Napa and beyond that protects the biodiversity and life of our planet.

Vibrant aromas of fresh summer apricot, sun-kissed white peach, wild raspberry, and red grapefruit burst from the glass. On the palate, this coastal wine is incredibly lifted and bright, exuding flavors of stone fruit, flower petal, crushed rock and lemon zest, all held together with a racy acidity and a bright, lingering, mineral finish.

Stéphane Aviron has adopted an almost radical return to tradition in Beaujolais: sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. His cru Beaujolais drink like fine Burgundy. Historically considered “poor man’s Burgundy,” a modern movement toward fruity, simple, quaffing wines boosted sales but eroded the region’s traditional quality. Stéphane Aviron has reversed the trend. By focusing on the Beaujolais village crus, the best sites for unique, expressive wines, and finding old parcels of vines, Aviron creates very expressive, age-worthy wines relying on traditional and new methods, including organic and biodynamic vineyard management. All wines are labeled “Vieilles Vignes,” old vines, because the vines are at least 40 years old. Stéphane Aviron’s wines are authentic in every way.

This wine is a brilliant example of Gamay’s shape-shifting qualities. The color is deeper than most Beaujolais, which isn’t surprising given the Côte du Py’s reputation for concentration. Aromas are deep and complex, shifting from brambly blackberries to savory plum to cassis; violets, crunchy leaves and mushroom as it opens up. Medium body, medium acidity, very rich in its fruit tones, with a healthy grip of tannin on the finish.
