Stewart wins county
commissioner seat

Harold Stewart has won the 4th District race for Wayne County commissioner.
Stewart, the Democratic nominee, defeated Republican nominee Fred Anderson 808-479 in the General Election Tuesday.
The only other candidate for local office—Michael Thornton, running for 2nd District county commissioner—had no opposition.
In other races, Wayne County voters as a whole favored Republicans all the way down the ballot, with the margin typically close to 3 to 1.
Local voters also favored all three constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Local voter turnout was 49.1 percent.

Why is Election Day on a Tuesday? You can thank America’s farmers—and their horses. 🐎🍂

When Congress established a uniform presidential election date in 1845, the calendar had to fit a largely farming nation.

November fell after the busy harvest season and before harsh winter weather. Tuesday gave rural voters Monday to travel to the polls by horse or on foot, without setting out on Sunday, a day many observed for worship and rest.

A familiar American tradition with roots in harvests, country roads, and a much slower commute!
