Someone asked our to***conist can premium cigar continue to aged after rolling?
Answer from our in-house sommelier: Can a premium cigar continue to aged after it’s rolled? No!
However, once a cigar is rolled, the process is no longer technically called “aging” in the same way to***co ages in pilónes or bales before rolling. The proper term is “resting.”
Before rolling, to***co goes through fermentation and true aging. After rolling, the cigar begins to rest, allowing the oils, flavors, and aromas inside the blend to marry together and mature over time. So while a rolled premium cigar can absolutely evolve and improve with proper storage, the transformation after rolling is best described as resting, not fermentation aging. Here’s the distinction: Before rolling: the to***co is truly fermenting and aging. Chemical changes are still happening aggressively ammonia dissipates, sugars develop, oils mature, harshness softens. After rolling: the cigar is no longer actively fermenting the same way, because airflow and compression are different. But the cigar still continues to marry, mellow, and evolve over time.
That “resting” process is still a form of aging to many cigar makers and sommeliers.
What actually happens in a humidor over years:
* Flavors integrate and become more unified
* Sharp pepper notes can soften
* Ammonia or bitterness may disappear
* Sweetness and creaminess can become more pronounced
* Strength can mellow
* Complexity can deepen
That’s why a 10-year-old Padrón or aged Fuente often tastes dramatically different than a fresh release.
Now, there is some truth behind the statement:
* A cigar sitting in a humidor is not “aging” at the same intensity as leaf in fermentation.
* If humidity is too high, too low, or unstable, the cigar may simply stagnate instead of improve.
* Some ci**rs peak early and actually lose character after too many years.
Think of it like this:
To***co ages before rolling.
The cigar evolves after rolling.
A well-made cigar stored properly at around 62–68% RH and stable temperature can absolutely become better over time. That’s why collectors age ci**rs for years sometimes decades.
