" Proof " in liquor is derived from 16th-century English testing methods, where spirits were mixed with gunpowder to verify they weren't diluted. If the alcohol-soaked gunpowder ignited, it was considered "proof" (evidence) that the spirit was strong enough—specifically, above 50% alcohol by volume (ABV)—and worthy of higher taxation.
