Did I miss someone’s birthday or anniversary? …. Oh yeah it was ours!

Today (Friday May, 8th) is our 2 year anniversary. Between planting season on the farm, special events for Mother’s Day and graduations I completely forgot! If it wasn’t for my sister coming in from Omaha to congratulate us, I would have missed it all together… Thanks for the flowers sis!

So in honor of our 2nd anniversary we will celebrate tomorrow! No need for me to whine about it, I’ll let you all wine about it!

On Saturday, May 9th come into the shop and for every 2 glasses of wine you buy, enjoy the next glass for 2 cents. Have 3 friends enjoying a beautiful Saturday together? Buy 2 and get the next one for 2 cents.

It’s a blending competition!

What is Rachel doing with this graduated cylinder? She is making her very own blended wine!

How is this done you ask? Join us on Thursday, May 14th at 6:00 and learn how and why blended wines are made. Then you will break off into teams and create your very own unique blend. Each team will submit their best or favorite blend which will be judged. The winning team receives a bottle of wine each.

The cost to attend is $40 per person. Teams are limited to 4 people each, but can be as small as 2 people. Call the shop at 402-705-0090 to book a space for the competition.

* All skill levels are encouraged to participate. The only qualification you need to have for this competition is that you like to drink wine.

Wine Blend Competition
On Thursday, May 14th at 6:00pm we will have a wine blending competition. The cost is $40 per person. This is a group event, so find a friend or friends who loves wine or just want to learn about blended wines. You will taste through 3 individual wines as I explain how blends are made. You will learn the successful components to a blended wine and then you and your team will have 30-45 minutes to create your very own blend. After you and your team have created the perfect blend a panel of judges will then judge the submissions. The winning team will be awarded a bottle of wine each! You will taste several wines, so please eat before coming to the competition.

Mediterranean Dinner with Tim Wallace
On Saturday, May 23rd we welcome Chef Tim Wallace who will be creating a 5 course Mediterranean themed dinner. I will take his menu and pair each course with a wine to elevate the experience. If you have ever had the pleasure to enjoy the food Tim creates you know this will be a very special meal indeed.
What - Mediterranean 5 course meal + wine pairings
When - Saturday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm (welcome drink and amuse bouche at 6:00, first course served at 6:30)

Master Sommeiler Event
On Thursday May 28th we welcome Jesse Becker to The Cheese and Wine Shop. Jesse is a Master Sommeiler, of which there are only about 60 in the world! Jesse's speciality is central European wines from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Jesse also imports wines from this region to the United States. We will taste through 5 different wines while Jesse talks about the grapes, the wines, the regions and his experiences. Each wine will be paired with the perfect cheese, which I will introduce and briefly talk about.

This month I am excited to feature the John X Merriman Bordeaux-style blend from the Rustenberg winery in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is a limited allocated wine and I was only able to get 23 bottles, so this is a one of a kind opportunity until the next vintage is released. The wine is $38 per bottle. Please call the shop at 402-705-0090 to reserve your bottle.

Rustenberg winery is one of the most historic and respected estates in the South Africas's Stellenbosch region. Named after John Xavier Merriman, a former owner of Rustenberg in the late 1800s, this wine reflects both the estate's heritage and the strength of Stellenbosch as a world-class region for Bordeaux varietals.

Rustenberg winery dates all the way back to 1682, making it one of the Cape's oldest wine estates. Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, the winery is known for producing structured, age worthy wines with a strong sense of place, combining old world elegance with new world fruit intensity.

John X Merriman Bordeaux-style blend is a blend that is dominated with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and will have smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. All these varietals contribute to its richness, polish, depth and complexity. This is a bold, cellar-worthy red wine with layers of dark fruit, to***co, cedar and savory spice making it an amazing alternative to a "Left Bank" French Bordeaux at a much more approachable price.

On the nose of this bold beauty you will get cassis, black currant, ripe plum, cigar box, cedar, graphite and to***co leaf with very subtle hints of mocha and dried herbs. On the palate the full bodied wine has blackberry, black cherry, black plum and currant fruits layered over expresso, baking spice and savory to***co. You will get some fine grained tannins making your mouth feel slightly scratchy for a moment before the bright acidity washes them away. The finish is long and lingering with dark fruits, cedar, cocoa and earthy spice. This wine is ready to be enjoyed today, or can be aged for 10 or more years. If you enjoy Napa Cabernet Sauvignons, Bordeaux blends or Super Tuscans from Italy this will be perfect for you!

The featured cheese to pair with the John X Merriman is Comte. This delicious French beauty is an Alpine-style cheese that is nutty and bold and perfect to stand up to the cigar and cedar notes of the wine. Comte is also perfect for cooking. It has a very low melting point creating decadent grilled cheese sandwiches, mac and cheese or mouthwatering lasagna (yes, substitute the mozzarella for comte!). We have plenty of Comte in stock to buy when picking up the wine.

Yes! We do catering. Mother’s Day, graduations, family gatherings, baby showers, holidays and any occasion to gather. These charcuterie boards are assembled with cheeses, meats, olives and other accoutrements that we import sourced from around the world direct to the shop. We make our boards to fit any budget.

Admittedly I do a poor job of photographing our work, but here are some examples of boards we have sent out. Oh and a photo of a cat. Because cats are trendy. (His name is kevin).
