When we first went into the Roll Your Own cigarette business we actually looked into the merits of purchasing the large high speed machines – the units where you just dump your to***co in one end, the tubes in another, 199 ci******es spit out and you are on your way. We believe, however, that eventually the courts are going to rule those machines are “manufacturing devices” and then all taxes that have not been paid on past purchases will be demanded by the government. In Pennsylvania additional Federal and State taxes amount to about $3.00 per pack. Using machines at Up in Smoke, you actually do “manufacture” your ci******es yourself and your purchases are only subject to Pennsylvania sales taxes. Takes a bit longer, but look at what you save. A carton-a-week smoker saves $1,500 to $2,000 per year. If you work and are paid for 40 hours per week that amounts to $1 an hour more in your paycheck! At Up in Smoke, we try to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The coffee pot is always on and usually some candy snacks are about. Actually, Up in Smoke would not be in business if the government made any sense. To***co is harmful to our health, adds to the cost of health care and contributes to lower work productivity when you miss work due to some illness where smoking has been a contributing factor. To***co companies pay billions of dollars in penalties as a result of court cases that have proven these facts. Some of these penalty dollars are used for smoking-prevention programs held in far more places than where you are allowed to smoke indoors. If government existed only for its citizens’ best interests, the above paragraph sounds like a case to “outlaw” smoking. Not likely, as long as to***co lobbyists write huge campaign checks to our government leaders and a sizeable number of citizens are opposed to government impairing our freedoms. The solution is, naturally, the one of least resistance – tax the hell out of smokers. That’s where Up in Smoke enters the picture. Obviously, the effect of higher taxes is that only the rich can afford to smoke. Even in Pennsylvania (not the highest), a pack a day smoker can spend $2,500 a year or more. We don’t want you to begin smoking, but we do believe you should have the same freedom of choice, regardless of income or social standing. This is particularly true when the only factor that makes smoking an overly expensive habit are ridiculously high taxes. In Chicago ci******es can run around $11 per pack and in the Big Apple prices are above $12!
