Village of Greenville Update: Proactive Planning for Regulation of Data Centers.

The Village of Greenville is taking a proactive step to regulate any potential future development related to large-scale data centers.

At this time, the Village has not been approached by any entity seeking to construct a data center in Greenville. However, communities across Wisconsin are actively studying this emerging land use due to its potential impacts on the community and the environment.

Research and experience from other municipalities show that large-scale facilities may place demands on energy and water use, emergency services, traffic, noise, and overall land use compatibility. These factors require thoughtful planning and local oversight.

Currently, the Village of Greenville does not have a specific ordinance or zoning definition that regulates data centers. Under the Village’s existing zoning code, a data center could potentially be permitted within standard industrial or manufacturing zoning districts. Because of this, the Village Board is being proactive by considering the need to establish clear standards and regulations before any proposals arise.

At the Monday, May 18, 2026, meeting, the Greenville Plan Commission recommended that a temporary moratorium be put in place for data centers. A moratorium is a common planning tool that allows a community to “press pause” on potential future proposals while appropriate regulations are researched and developed.

Taking this step now allows Greenville to:
1. Ensure future proposals align with community values and long-term plans.
2. Protect public health, safety, and infrastructure.

This effort is about preparing for the future, not responding to an immediate proposal. We will continue to share updates as discussions move forward.

If you have any questions, please contact Village Administrator Travis Parish at 920-757-5151.
