As a new homeowner with an indoor pool, one of the most important systems in your home is the pool room dehumidifier. Unfortunately, it’s often overlooked. You want the pool room to be a comfortable space to enjoy with family and friends, but controlling its environment is not just about comfort, it’s about protecting your home, your health, and your investment. Your pool room’s dehumidification system may need maintenance, upgrading or replacement.
Even when no one is in the pool, water is evaporating into the air. Moisture from the pool goes into the air and condenses windows and can migrate into walls, ceilings and other parts of the house. A pool cover helps reduce evaporation that still occurs when it’s not in use. Chlorine-rich air can cause metal to corrode and mold growth if not removed with proper dehumidification.
If you’ve just bought a home with an indoor pool, have the pool room checked for signs of corrosion or moisture damage. Determine the dehumidifier’s age and manufacturer. Residential pool dehumidifiers have a lifespan of about 15 years when maintained and less if not serviced regularly. Older systems that aren’t as efficient remove less moisture and use more energy. Some are not built with components that last.
If your dehumidifier system is more than 12 years old, have it evaluated for signs of needed maintenance or upgrade or replacement. Have it inspected by an expert to verify it’s sized correctly for the pool and operating correctly and efficiently. Ask for a professional recommendation on the service needed and whether it’s worthwhile to upgrade this system with a new, improved replacement unit.
