Bill Jr. aka Grandpa 🤼‍♂️

Yesterday we saluted the William R. Faeth barn at Viele and mentioned William R. Faeth II being as star wrestler on the FMHS team in 1927-28 year.
The team pictured below: (l-r) Top Row: Thomas Orr (coach) , Cecil Fish, Vernon Bellew, Cedric Kroll, Kenneth Kern, William Faeth, R. S. Underhill (asst coach); middle row: Homer Britton, Joe Barron, Denver Smith, Frank Hirstine, Lloyd Hirstine, Joseph Peacock; Front row: Larson Watts, Lowell Fish, Elmer Curtis, Bernard Barnes, Roland Trabue.
Vern Bellew at 158 # placed third in state meet, Barnes at 115 # placed 4th , Britton at 105 # couldn't make his weight and Faeth at 125 # was eliminated in first match by winner of the state championship.
This was the third year for wrestling at FMHS so the team did great, however, wrestling and boxing were dropped in 1929 year.
Sharing history at the NLCHS museum on 10th street in the ATSF/CBQ Depot Complex open noon-4 pm Sunday and 10-4pm rest of week.

Still in use, but only as a barn these days!

Still in use, but only as a barn these days!

Probably the biggest tourist attraction in Viele, Iowa the William R. Faeth barn erected in 1926 and is just 99 years old. The property is still in the Faeth family and well kept up.
The story as told below is about all to be said but the part about how some of the lumber was obtained not in the story.
On October 1, 1926 a tabernacle was being built on the southwest corner of 18th street & Avenue H. QUICKLY. It was to seat 2,000 people. I said quickly because on October 3, 1926 the first services were held at the Union Tabernacle with 1,000 at the morning service and 1,200 at evening service with evangelist Dr. Floyd John Evans and Professor Mills providing music. Rev. U. G. Miller, pastor of the Baptist church and the Fort Madison Ministerial Association sponsored the event. The crowds were so immense the Fort Madison Police were called for control.
On October 23 an advertisement ran that tabernacle was for sale and must be torn down and site cleared. Services continued until Nov. 1 , 1926 and the evangel team moved on to Dallas City and the winning bid was $1,025 by William R. Faeth to the FM Ministerial association.
So before the roof and dance floor was put on the cement block barn, thousands of people had sat & walked on those boards - transported the four miles to Viele.
Remembering history at the NLCHS Museums in the ATSF/CBQ Depot Complex open 10-4 pm daily and noon-4pm Sunday.
Stop and visit!

Yesterday, February 6, Mr. Bill had his knee scoped. He’s doing well. He just wants everyone to know what a great experience he had at FMCH. Everyone associated with the surgery & recovery were so kind to him. He says all you ever hear is the bad. He wanted you to know they do good also!
