There was a year in south Louisiana when the phone stopped ringing, and a whole generation of children packed up and left the state for good. 📦

Nobody calls it a disaster because nothing burned and nothing flooded. It was worse than that. It was slow.

In February 1981 Louisiana crude was bringing about forty dollars a barrel. The rig count in this country hit a record four thousand five hundred and twenty one that December. Everybody in Lafayette and Morgan City and Houma had a cousin in the patch and a truck note they were not worried about.

Then the floor came out. By July 1986 the Louisiana first purchase price had fallen to just over twelve dollars. West Texas crude touched ten dollars and a quarter on the last day of March that year. The rig count collapsed to six hundred and eighty six. The oil and gas industry shed roughly a hundred and fifty thousand jobs in 1986 alone.

Louisiana was pulling something like forty percent of its state revenue out of oil and gas that year, so the state went down with it. Unemployment peaked at twelve point seven percent in the fall of 1986. Between 1980 and 1994 this state lost seventy banks, better than a fifth of every bank in Louisiana.

Between the 1980 census and the 1990 census, Louisiana's population grew by three tenths of one percent. Three tenths. In a decade when the rest of the South was booming. The state lost a seat in Congress.

What that number actually means is Houston, and Dallas, and Atlanta. It means that if you are from south Louisiana and you are over fifty, you can name the year your brother left, and you can name the ones who never came back.

There is no marker for it. No anniversary. No storm name. 🕯️

But go to a family reunion in Acadiana and count how many people had to fly in, and you will find the 1980s sitting right there at the table, in every empty chair somebody had to drive nine hours to fill. ⚜️

Did you see all the smoke today? We did too. Our fire fighters were working their patooties off and they got hungry!!! And, we are going to make sure they don’t come out their own volunteer pockets anymore when they are doing what we cannot.

So…. We are providing a significant discount on our cafe food, bottled water, and ice for the immediate future for the fire crews. But, there’s so many of them, we can’t do 100% on everything - everyday.

If you’d like to help too, we are implementing a fire fighter tip jar to help cover the rest of the cost. Tell any store employee and they will gladly add your gift to the fund.

At the end of this crisis, any remaining gifts will be given to our local South Sabine Fire Department Wards 1&2.
