*We are asking all of you to please share the news all over the Emida, Santa, Fernwood and Clarkia*
Upriver Community United (UCU), the non-profit behind the Upriver Foodbank, Fernwood Days and many other classes and community outreach programs is proudly announcing the 2026 Upriver Scholarship Program. Under the Program, seven scholarships, totaling $4,000, will be awarded to any Upriver residents looking to pursue continuing education. This includes those under 18 wishing to dual enroll as well as high school seniors and adults who wish to take the next step in their education. The goal of the scholarship is to support Emida, Santa, Fernwood and Clarkia residents in their efforts to reach whatever degree/certificate they are aiming for. ~ “It’s just as important to us to encourage our 16- and 18-year-olds to start planning for their future as it is to support the single mom working on a degree or the logger looking to transition with a welding certification. As a community organization it is vitally important to invest in any of our residents wanting to take the next step, no matter their age.”~
Paper application packets are available online or in these designated locations: Santa Post Office Board, Fernwood Merc Board, Tri-Community Library, Drifters Board and Clarkia Post Office Board. Applications must be postmarked by June 5th to the address included in the packet, late packets will not be accepted. Paper applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of volunteers from the Upriver community and applicants will be given the opportunity to participate in an Interview/Presentation evening on Friday, July 10th. ~ “Like most scholarship opportunities we have asked applicants to write a paragraph or two explaining what they are planning to pursue and why. Unlike most scholarship opportunities, the UCU recognizes that essays do not provide a full scope of the knowledge and abilities of those pursuing the trades. This is an opportunity to meet the committee members, discuss the decision to pursue this degree/certificate or present a project/portfolio of what each applicant can already do or are hoping to improve upon.”~
Recipients will be selected and notified before Fernwood Days at the end of July. ~ “We hope to present the scholarships before the parade so that our awardees can walk in the Fernwood Days parade with their families Saturday, July 25th at 10am. What a beautiful way to celebrate their efforts and goals while encouraging and reminding the community on the sidelines that we take pride in our own.”~
