Thinking about a backyard gathering Memorial Day weekend? Be safe with your campfire!

While most of the state received rain, north-central and northeastern areas didn’t get much. This weekend, high fire danger will persist in parts of northern Minnesota.

Fire danger can change quickly, even after precipitation falls. Before you start any fire, check conditions at mndnr.gov/burnrestrictions. Then, follow campfire safety tips:

✔️Clear burnable material 5 feet in all directions around the fire.
✔️Build within a designated fire ring 3 feet or less in diameter.
✔️Keep it small, not tall. Your campfire should be 3 feet high or less.
✔️Only burn firewood, tinder, and kindling – not trash.
✔️Have a shovel and water available to extinguish the campfire.
✔️Drown and stir your fire, then check – if it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Add more water, stir, and repeat until it’s out cold.
