We’ve had to pivot from our original tasting (Burgundy) to “Best Sellers” for today. All four of these wines have sold really well for us over many vintages. Quality to price is hard to beat, they won’t break the bank and they are readily available for purchase in quantities.

2023, Chateau Ducasse, Bordeaux Blanc: 65% Semillon 32%, Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Aromatics of melon, peach, nectarine and lemon curd. Soft but bright with notes of white peach, kiwi fruit, white rose petal and a touch of spice on the finish. A terrific wine that walks the line between racy and voluptuous. $22.99/$20.69

2023, Tenuta Tascante, Buonora, Etna Bianco: 100% Carricante. The Etna Bianco Buonora is nuanced and savory in the glass, impressing with a mix of yellow apple, dried florals, hints of raw almond and smoke. This is soft-textured with a lovely acid balance that motivates its saline-tinged orchard fruits and hints of sour melon. The Buonora finishes with finesse, both lightly structured and classically dry. This is already so pretty today, but with the potential for short-term cellaring. Vinus awarded this wine 91 points. $31.99/$28.79

2018,Secret Squirrel Winery, Columbia Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. This is a playful yet refined winery that emerged from the creative minds behind Washington’s renowned wineries Corliss and Tranche. Crafted from the best barrels that didn’t make the cur for Corliss, Secret Squirrel boasts the same estate vineyards, meticulous winemaking techniques and unwavering commitment to quality. This wine is fresh, expressive and pure, with an open-knit, juicy, succulent core. Medium to full bodied with notes of black and blue fruits on the nose. The palate reveals hints of raspberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and fresh coffee beans. Fine grained tannins round out this wine nicely. Wine Advocate awarded this wine 90 points. $27.99/$25.19

2022, Mark Ryan Winery, Columbia Valley, Monkey Wrench, Red Wine: Monkey Wrench continues the Mark Ryan tradition of song-based names for serious wines that deliver massive flavor at an attractive price. Sleek and well-built, with a generous core of black cherry, bay leaf and toasty spices that gathers richness toward polished tannins. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. $34.99/$31.49

Yup, that’s right, Owner/Winemaker, Jerry Riener, will be here today to taste us on four delicious wines from Guardian Cellars.

Jerry, a graduate of the University of Washington (a degree in organic chemistry) and a graduate of the police academy, soon began helping out at a number of Woodinville wineries – including Baer, Mark Ryan and Matthews. After about four years of volunteering 40-plus hours a week, Jerry decided to start Guardian Cellars with one Bordeaux-style blend, a Cabernet and a Syrah. When he and Jennifer Sullivan first met it was just a few weeks after she started her dream job in her hometown of Seattle. She was a crime reporter for The Seattle Times, fresh from jobs in South Florida and Baltimore. It was distrust at first sight, as is often the case with cops and reporters. But after a few margaritas and a night of debating the finer points of 90’s dance music they realized they had a lot in common. It wasn’t long before they married.

2024, Angle, Sauvignon Blanc: This wine hails from the Corfu Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA. This gorgeous wine exudes notes of citrus zest, lemon drop candy, lemon curd and a hint of apricot. It’s vibrant, fresh and rich on the palate. The wine was fermented on a mix of stainless steel and French oak before blending to add some weight and texture. Summertime, Wintertime, anytime, this wine is perfect for all occasions. $27.99/$25.19

2024, Pursued, Rose: Pursued is fresh, clean and bright. This pretty pink wine if full of notes of Rainier cherry, white nectarine, honeydew melon and watermelon. This Grenache (40%), Syrah (30%) and Mourvedre (30%) blend was sourced from Coyote Creek Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, is delicate, delicious, fresh and oh so drinkable now. $27.99/$25.19

2021, Five-O: Back for its third vintage the Five-O is dark, rich, layered and polished. The blend of 34% Cabernet Franc and Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% each Malbec and Petit Verdot was sourced from Quintessence Vineyard in Red Mountain and Stone Tree Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope. Swirl, sniff and sip, you’ll be met with notes of ripe black cherry, black currant, black olive, rich chocolate cake and vanilla. This gorgeous wine, aged on 60% new French oak is earthy, grippy and simply delicious. $59.99/$53.99

2022, Chalk Line: Chalk Line has become a fan-favorite for all occasions. From birthday celebrations to Tuesday night taco night, this wine always over-delivers. Comprised of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Syrah and 5% Merlot, this vintage is a blend in the truest sense – it was sourced from vineyards in Red Mountain and Wahluke Slope. It features notes of sweet blackberry, black cherry and vanilla. The mouthfeel is vibrant, balanced and full of nicely structured tannins. The wine was aged 18 months on 30% new French oak before bottling. $24.99/$31.49

Today, we will be celebrating Bastille Day (Mon. July 14) with a lovely portfolio of exciting French wines. A little something for everyone.

The Bastille is a medieval fortress and prison in Paris. Many people in France associated it with the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy in the late 1700s. On July 14, 1789, troops stormed the Bastille. This was a pivotal event at the beginning of the French Revolution. Fête de la Fédération was held on July 14, 1790. This was a way to celebrate the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in France. Official celebrations were held in Paris on June 30, 1878, to honor the Republic of France. A politician named Benjamin Raspail proposed that July 14 should become a holiday in France in 1880. The law was enacted on July 6, 1880. Bastille Day was a public holiday for the first time on July 14, 1880.

2023, Baudouin Millet, Chablis: The fruit for this Chablis comes from estate-owned 30 year old vineyard plots in the villages of Beru and Viviers, located East of the appellation. The fruit for this cuvee is traditionally fermented and matured in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, on fine lees for six months. This Chablis presents an elegant light gold hue with hints of green. Its aromatic profile is lively, blending mineral tones, delicate floral scents and subtle fruit notes. On the palate, it is silky and generous, displaying a balanced tension and delivering precise, chiseled flavors. Overall, it strikes a harmonious balance between juiciness and impactful character, making it a triumph. $37.99/$34.19

2023, Chateau Croix d’Allons, Bandol, Rose’: 60% Mourvedre and 20% each Cinsault and Grenache. The nose is expressive strawberry puree, with a lightness of white flowers. Peach and melon can also be found on the nose. A clear peach color, the palate shows hints of candied fruits, floral and citrus notes along with a slight hint of salinity. Ample and fat on the tongue. A superb wine. $29.99/$26.99

2022, Domaine Andre Berthet-Rayne, “La Huppe Perchee”: A delightful blend of 60% Grenache and 20% each Syrah and Carignan. Aromas of dried black fruits and garrigue along fresh raspberry and strawberry. On the palate are hints of black raspberry, blackberry, to***co, raisins, dark chocolate and a touch of light smokiness. This wine can be served with a bit of a chill on it at this time of the year. $24.99/$22.49

2022, Domaine des Clos Maurice, Saumur Rouge, “La Piece d’Or”: Domaine des Clos Maurice, based in Saumur Champigny, comes from a centuries-old estate (since 1783) and has certifications in Organic and Biodynamic viticulture. This Saumur rouge is from younger vines and is lovely. You’ll delight in the black cherry and raspberry notes with subtle touches of violet on the nose, followed by loads of vibrant cherry and black plum fruit on the palate. Mild tannins and a medium body make this a silky sipper. This chillable red strikes a perfect balance of fruit, acidic tension, grip and concentration. The finish is long and smooth—a thirst-quenching drinking pleasure—not just for lunch. $23.99/$21.59

We were rather stumped as to what we were going to taste the day after The Fourth!

Something light to go with Summer foods? Can’t do French, because we will be celebrating Bastille Day next weekend? There’s plenty of Washington wineries we could do, but already have Guardian on the calendar for later this month. What. To. Pour? Then in walked my Petit Monde sales rep, Jason Marvin, a wine guy that we have a lot of respect for, with a terrific lineup of Lambruscos’ from Paltrinieri!! Viola, our problem was solved!! When was the last time we tasted Lambrusco, let alone three of them? Well, we are going to change that on Sat. July 5!

Lambrusco is arguably the most misunderstood wine on the market. Too often associated with the overly sweet, cheap soda-like varieties of the past, this wonderful wine deserves better. It’s time to branch out and give these lovely bubbles a chance to impress, because they will. There are 10 varieties of Lambrusco, but the most well-known and prestigious are Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Grasparossa, and Lambrusco Salamino.

Paltrinieri is located in the heart of the Sorbara DOC by the historic Cru of Cristo di Sorbara. Since 1998, the estate has been run by fourth generation Alberto Paltrinieri and his wife, Barbara, though the estate was founded in 1926 by Alberto’s grandfather, Achill.

2023, Paltrinieri, Lambrusco di Sorbara, ‘Sant’Agata: This 100% Sorbara Lambrusco captivates with its lifted aromas, showcasing notes of cranberry and red currants sprinkled with sea salt. The palate pops with a vibrant interplay of tartness and sourness, reminiscent of zesty lemon juice squeezed over macerated raspberries. It finishes with a savory herbal quality that balances out the fruity core of the wine allowing for a multitude of options for the table. Wine Enthusiast awarded this wine 92 points. $22.99/$20.69

2023, Paltrinieri, Lambrusco di Sorbara, ‘Radice’: Paltrinieri’s Radice Lambrusco di Sorbara is a vibrant and elegantly structured Metodo Ancestrale sparkling red, showcasing purity, freshness and finesse. The nose bursts with wild strawberry, pomegranate and crushed raspberry, intertwined with notes of rose petals, citrus zest and subtle ye**ty undertones. The palate is crisp yet textured, offering bright red fruit, delicate tannins and a fine, persistent mousse, all lifted by racy acidity. A long, refreshing finish lingers with hints of tart cranberry and mineral salinity. $27.99/$25.19

2023, Paltrinieri, Lambrusco Dell’Emilia, ‘Solce’: 100% Salamino. Lifted and pretty, this Lambrusco exudes a bouquet of vibrant purple and blue flowers, such as violets, lavender and iris. Wild plums and sour cherries seem to have been steeped in a bowl of wild mint and thyme, with intriguing hints of mushroom and freshly turned earth adding depth to the aromatic profile. The palate is lush, brimming with a medley of purple fruits and the finish is touched with a delightful sweetness that lingers and is lifted by an energetic pop of acidity on the finish. Wine Enthusiast awarded this wine 91 points. $19.99/$17.99
