September 5th Devils Lake, ND Fishing Report

Storms have mixed things up a bit on Devils Lake this week. We’re seeing lots of floating w**ds, and some areas have gotten pretty dirty. That being said, there are still plenty of fish to be caught. We’re also starting to see more northern pike and white bass showing up.

Looking at the 10-day forecast, we’re finally starting to see some cooler temperatures. Hopefully this will bring the water temperatures down and be the beginning of our fall fishing season.

One thing we’ve noticed is lots of small white bass in the stomachs of the fish we’re catching. When the fish are keyed in on them, matching the hatch can make a big difference. White is definitely the go-to color right now. Try using crankbaits with a profile that resembles a small white bass.

Walleyes have remained fairly scattered, so the name of the game has been covering water. We’ve been trolling crankbaits with both leadcore and flat lines.

For shallower water, we’re using FireLine or mono, while deeper water is where the leadcore comes into play to get those crankbaits down to the right depth.

Bottom bouncers and spinners are still producing some fish, but some days they simply don’t cover enough water to get you on consistent fish.

When the walleyes are scattered, trolling crankbaits has been the better way to locate them.

The cooler weather should hopefully get things moving toward that fall bite we all look forward to! 🎣🍂

🎣 8-7 Devils Lake Fishing Report 🎣

This week's cold front has definitely shaken things up. Water temperatures dropped by as much as 10 degrees in some areas, and the fish have been adjusting right along with it.

There still seem to be two different depth ranges producing fish. Some anglers are finding success out deep in 20–30 feet, while others are staying shallow in 5–10 feet. It really depends on the day. One day the deep bite shines, and the next the shallow fish take over.

The biggest key right now is covering water. Fish are spread out in small pockets, so don't expect every spot to be loaded. Trolling has been the most effective way to locate active fish.

🎣 Top presentations:• Bottom bouncers and spinners• Leadcore with crankbaits
Smiley blades continue to outproduce traditional spinner blades.

Our best colors this week have been:⚪ White🟠 Orange🥈 Silver

Target a trolling speed of 1 mph with bottom bouncers and spinners.

For crankbaits, Salmo Hornets and Rapala Shad Raps have been the go-to choices. Troll around 2 mph to cover water and locate active fish.

🐊 The cooler water has also improved the pike bite, and we're starting to see a few more perch showing up as well.

Fishing has been a little tougher this week, but there are still plenty of opportunities. Anglers are catching fish—they're just having to work a little harder for them.

The best advice we can give right now: Don't get married to one spot. Keep covering water until you find a pod of active fish.

🎣 Devils Lake Fishing Report 🎣

The dog days of summer are here, but don't let the heat fool you—the walleye bite is still going strong!

Fish are spread throughout the basin right now, so don't get locked into one pattern. Early in the morning we're finding fish on structure and along w**d edges. As the sun gets higher, many of those fish slide out to nearby mud flats and deeper basin areas to feed.

🔥 Bottom bouncers and spinner rigs continue to be one of the most consistent ways to put fish in the boat. Pulling harnesses with smiley blades has been producing well, and that second hook has been making a difference on short-biting fish.

🎣 Crankbaits are also catching fish. Troll w**d edges early, then transition to deeper structure and basin edges as the day warms up. Don't be afraid to change speeds and cover water until you find active fish.

🎈 Bobbers and leeches are still catching walleyes, especially during the low-light periods of the day. If you mark a pod of fish, it's worth stopping and giving them a try.

🟢 Productive colors this week have been:• Green• Orange• Chartreuse• Gold

The biggest key right now is staying mobile. Fish are moving with bait, bug hatches, and changing water conditions. If a spot looks good but isn't producing, don't be afraid to move. The next stop could be loaded.

☀️ The forecast looks great, so get an early start, stay hydrated, and enjoy some time on the water!

🎣 7-24 Devils Lake Fishing Report 🎣

This heat just won't give it up! 🥵 Mornings remain the best time to get out on the water. Some days, the afternoon bite can be very challenging.

Walleyes are showing up in more mud areas this week. This could be a combination of a few things—higher water temperatures pushing fish deeper and bug hatches giving them plenty of food to feed on.
Some mornings, we're still finding fish right away on structure. As the morning progresses, those fish seem to slide out into deeper water.

🔥 Bottom bouncers and spinners continue to produce, but smiley blades have seemed to outfish traditional spinner blades. We recommend running harnesses as well. Some days, having that back hook is making the difference between getting bites and actually catching fish.

🎈 Bobbers and leeches are still producing, but it's been a bit of a rollercoaster. Some days the fish absolutely refuse to touch them, while other days they can't get enough. Be ready to switch things up.

🟢 Green and orange have been good colors.
When fishing mud, that could mean anywhere from 10–30 feet, depending on what part of the lake you're fishing. Look for basin areas and flats adjacent to deeper structure.

🎣 Pulling crankbaits is also producing fish. Salmo Hornets and Flicker Shads have been good choices.

The key right now is to be flexible. Start early, pay attention to where the fish are moving as the day progresses, and don't be afraid to change depths and presentations.

🎣 7-17 Devils Lake Fishing Update 🎣
Weeds, w**ds, and more w**ds... did I mention the w**ds? 🌿

The w**d bite has really taken off this past week, and those w**d edges are holding a lot of walleyes. Depending on the shoreline, we're finding fish anywhere from 5–15 feet of water.

Focus on sharp w**d edges where structure keeps the w**ds from growing. Look for roads, rock piles, house foundations, and other hard-bottom areas. These transitions have been holding some nice fish.

🔥 Bottom bouncers and spinners continue to be the best way to cover water. One important tip—keep the w**ds off your gear! It may mean checking your spinner and bottom bouncer every couple of minutes. If they're covered in w**ds, the walleyes aren't going to eat them.

🎈 Bobbers and leeches have also been producing well. If you find a pocket of active fish on a w**d edge, don't be afraid to stop and soak a few bobbers. Sometimes slowing down is exactly what the fish want.
Be flexible. Fish move. We're seeing spots loaded with fish one day and nearly empty the next. If a spot isn't producing, don't be afraid to pick up and keep looking.

We're also finding fish relating to the old shoreline in 18–22 feet of water, so don't overlook the deeper bite if the w**ds aren't producing.

The weather has been great, the fish are biting, and it's a fantastic time to get out on Devils Lake.

☀️ Devils Lake, ND Weather Outlook

Get out the sunscreen and the big-brim hats—summer is here! 😎

This week is shaping up to be hot and sunny, and that's great news for the lake. The warmer weather should help get some algae growth going, creating that stained water we like to see.

When that happens, look for the shallow bite in 15 feet of water or less to really take off. Don't be fooled into thinking the walleye bite slows down when the temperatures climb. Around Devils Lake, it often does just the opposite!

Stay hydrated, keep an eye on the weather, and enjoy what looks to be a great week to be on the water.

See you at Ed's! 🎣
