It's that time of year where we remind our neighbors and friends that Ascension School's campus is closed to the public. Camps are underway and our #1 priority is keeping kids safe. If you enter campus without a visitor badge, you will be quickly greeted by a member of the staff. Thanks for helping us manage risk! The trail is open to all, year round. Enjoy!

Pool Update! We are in the permitting process. It's been a lot of work getting to this point. While we wait, there continues to be plenty of work. Our cultural assessment continues, and we are solidifying contractors and plans - fence, pool house and sitework beyond the pool dig.

COVE RURAL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT RECEIVES MAJOR GRANT FROM THE WILDHORSE FOUNDATION FOR HANDHELD RADIOS

COVE – (Press release from the Cove Rural Fire Protection District) Cove Rural Fire Protection District updates handheld radios with a $15,300 grant from the Wildhorse Foundation.

The Cove Rural Fire Protection District was formed in 1955 to provide volunteer fire and quick response medical service to the area. Many dedicated volunteers throughout the years established a reliable and well-equipped department. As we move forward with future generations it was determined that the handheld radios that were in use were no longer serviceable and needed to be replaced.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Wildhorse Foundation the department will be going into one of the driest years thus far on record with handheld radios that are dependable, reliable, and compatible with mutual aid departments. A firefighter on the department stated, “I feel much safer being able to communicate with other emergency responders on fire and medical calls as communication is the number one priority”.

Each year, the Wildhorse Foundation makes grants to eligible nonprofit, government, and Tribal organizations within the homeland area of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla people. Also eligible for funding are Tribal government agencies or Native American charitable organizations with their base of operations within Oregon, as well as national or regional Indian organizations. The Wildhorse Foundation has awarded a total of over $20 million in grant funding since its establishment in 2001. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis with the deadlines being January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.

The Cove Rural Fire Protection District as well as most departments are always needing volunteers if you have the drive to help others in times of need. About the Wildhorse Foundation: The fund reflects the commitment of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to take a proactive, positive role in the well-being of the community. Funds, derived from a percentage of revenues from Wildhorse Resort & Casino, are managed and distributed by a Board of Directors comprised of community leaders and representatives of the CTUIR.

🔥 Union County Fire Officials Recommend Early Entry Into Regulated Fire Season

Due to increasingly dry conditions throughout the county, the Union County Fire Defense Board will recommend that the Union County Board of Commissioners enter into an early regulated fire season during the June 3, 2026 Commission meeting. The Fire Defense Board is comprised of county fire chiefs and other officials from throughout Union County.

Fire officials report that this spring has experienced warmer-than-normal weather conditions, contributing to rapidly drying fuels across the county. Based on these observed conditions, fire danger is currently higher in many areas than is typical for this time of year. Although weather forecasted this week is expected to bring some cooling temperatures and moisture to the region, officials state it will not be enough to significantly improve the overall dry conditions.

Individuals interested in conducting open burning prior to the anticipated early entry into fire season are reminded to use extreme caution. Burn conditions, updated daily, are available by calling 541-963-4040 or online at https://unioncountyor.gov/smoke-management/. Individuals conducting open burning must have a printed or digital copy of the Union County Burn Ordinance 2024-02. A copy of the ordinance in your possession serves as your burn permit.

Residents are encouraged to use caution with any activity that could spark a fire and to remain aware of current and changing fire conditions throughout the county.
