In June, when the corn on Lower Cove Road stands about a foot tall, Dian Frisch draws a picture on a sheet of paper, then folds the paper until she has nine squares. Then she walks into the field with her daughter, Maggie, and whoever else is working that day.

They pace off the picture, one square at a time.

“It takes about four people to cut the maze because you have to have people just stand there,” Dian says. “You’re like, ‘You go stand 20 paces that way.’” Then somebody starts the push mower. This year, it was one of the two high school kids who work for the family, with Dian and Maggie calling directions from the rows.

No GPS is used to make this maze, and no drone is guiding the mower. It is all done from the ground. The picture changes every year, and Dian would rather nobody sees it before they walk in. If it gets posted online, she says, everybody is going to know their way through.
