Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced yet another scam is making its rounds under the name of a genuine deputy.
“What we’ve determined on this one is this fake deputy is trying to obtain information on an individual,” the sheriff said, “for possible identity theft or worse.”
Ravenell said that on Tuesday the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) – Orangeburg received a call from a “Deputy Quentin Williams.”
The fake deputy then wanted information on an employee or patient but was refused.
MUSC then notified the genuine Dep. Williams about the attempt.
Dep. Williams was hung up on after a call to the number. The second was met with foul language.
The number used is 803-598-4195.
“We want to warn businesses and residents around the community, do not give out employee or personal information,” Ravenell said. “Just call us instead.”
Anyone receiving such a call can report it to the Orangeburg County Communications center at 803-534-3550.
