FLOWERCUP’S ENTERTAINMENT TIPS
SCENARIO 2: The family dinner where one relative always proclaims controversial views.

Everyone’s dressed up, the table is beautifully set, and Uncle Herman starts on a political rant. What do you do?

Ask him to pass you the bottle of rich yet elegant 2020 vintage Barbaresco Barasin ($48.10), luscious, expressive Morgon from Beaujolais ($36.80), or magical gewürztraminer from Alsace ($39.00) you brought for the table. Pour the wine, and ask him for his opinion on it. He may be so pleased that someone actually wants his opinion that he changes the subject.

THE MAGIC OF BUBBLES
Start your holiday celebration with a Rosé Lambrusco ($29.40) from Emilia-Romagna, Italy, pink in the glass dry with a cranberry bite, and fragrant with the perfume of strawberries. If you yearn for a sparkling wine made in the Champagne method but without a Champagne price, we suggest a Loire Valley crémant of chenin blanc spun into liquid gold ($40.00) by a Rumplestiltskin of the vineyard. Or if you are celebrating in an intimate circle of gourmands, treat yourselves to a bottle of rosé Champagne that defies and pushes the boundaries of complexity, structure and elegance and comes in a shockingly beautiful shade of coral in the glass ($88.60). Your guests will be enthralled by your astute epicurean wizardry.

FLOWERCUP’S ENTERTAINMENT TIPS
SCENARIO 1: A huge family gathering with undiscerning wine drinkers.

You’ve been invited to the annual gathering at a relative’s house where the crowd is always big and the wine dreadful. What do you do?

Offer to provide the wine for this year’s feast and pick up a box of passe-tout-grains, a blend of pinot noir and gamay from Burgundy ($45.40 for a three-liter box), and a couple liter bottles of grüner veltliner from Austria ($22.00 for a liter bottle). You’ll get bang for your buck and ensure that you too can enjoy the wine with turkey.

We have a treat for those who think all white wine from Burgundy is chardonnay. Burgundy produces a second great white grape: aligoté. Aligoté wine is rarely seen in the USA because it’s made in small quantities and mostly drunk locally. It embodies the electricity and craftsmanship of Burgundian winemaking but is traditionally made in a fresher style than chardonnay. We have one from the 2020 vintage that is starting to show the haunting overtones of age ($33.40). With its delicate flavors (lemon verbena, green apple) and beautifully integrated acidity, it’s a wine of perfect manners. It shimmers like a beam of light.

Here’s another suggestion for those who love the best aged white Burgundies but not their prices. Jura is a wine region east of Burgundy with its own distinctive varietals and traditions. Through tireless research, we uncovered an astounding 2020 bottling of savagnin from Jura ($38.60) made in a fresh, clean style (rather than the oxidized style Jura is known for). This wine develops like a symphony, unspooling spice, baked citrus, and a golden burnish. A fortunate delay in distribution has given it three years of bottle age, which have introduced an evocative mellowness. We entered the wine business to share enchanting wines like this.

The next time you visit the shop, you may meet Alex, Flowercup’s first employee.

Up to now, we’ve done everything ourselves, because we despaired of ever finding an employee with the right combination of savoir-faire and wine savvy. Then Alex appeared, like a dream come true. He has long experience working at one of the best wine shops in the Hudson Valley.

With his aid, Flowercup can open on Tuesdays. Below are the new, expanded business hours:

Sun., Mon., Tues. / 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm
Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat. / 11:00 am – 7:00 pm

We’ll also have more time to travel to industry events in New York City, where we meet winemakers and importers and ferret out the most memorable bottlings in every category.
