On this day in 1861, the Confederate Congress adopted the First National flag, nicknamed the "Stars and Bars," as the official flag of the Confederate States of America. At first, it only had seven stars, representing the States of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. Four more stars were added a few months later when the States of Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina joined the Confederacy, followed by two more stars soon after, representing the Border States of Missouri and Kentucky. The thirteen star First National flag is the basis of the current Georgia State flag that was adopted on May 8, 2003.
The flag of the Confederacy was changed to the Second National flag ("Stainless Banner") on April 22, 1863, and then again to the Third National flag ("Bloodstained Banner") on March 4, 1865.
