At Leaf to Ash Cigar Lounge, we believe in celebrating not only the ci**rs we smoke but also the people who make this community extraordinary.

Today, we honor Carl Moodispaugh – founder of Cigar Fanatics and the innovative Zoom Cigar Bar. Carl’s passion for ci**rs and his dedication to connecting enthusiasts worldwide built a legacy that continues to inspire. From a small online group to a vibrant global family of cigar lovers, his vision reshaped how we share this hobby.

Before becoming a bridge-builder who turned strangers into friends within the cigar community, Carl proudly served in the U.S. Army as a crewman on an M1A1 Abrams tank with the 37th Armor in Germany. His service reflected the same courage and commitment he later brought to building lasting connections among cigar enthusiasts.

Though Carl passed away in 2021, his spirit and contributions live on. We are proud to include him on our In Memoriam Wall, ensuring his name and impact remain part of our lounge and the cigar culture we cherish.

📚 Cigar Lesson Monday: How Cigar Rollers Earn Their Stripes
Every premium cigar tells a story—and so does the person who rolls it. In Cuba, cigar rollers (torcedores) go through one of the most structured training systems in the world, advancing through a Level 1–9 hierarchy.

✅ Levels 1–5: Rollers start as apprentices, learning the fundamentals by rolling simple parejos (straight ci**rs).

✅ Levels 6–8: With years of practice, they tackle more complex shapes and larger production quotas.

✅ Level 9: The elite. These master rollers can craft the most difficult vitolas, such as Salomones and Diademas, with precision. Earning this title often takes 15–20 years, and only a select few ever achieve it.

🌎 How do other countries do it?

Dominican Republic & Nicaragua: These countries have their own world-class rollers, but training is factory-specific rather than nationally standardized. Mastery is earned through experience, and many factories have internal mentorship programs where veterans teach newcomers.

Honduras: Similar to DR and Nicaragua, skill levels are based on years of rolling and the ability to produce complex ci**rs, not a formal ranking system.

Worldwide (Boutique Brands): Outside Cuba, the term “Level 9” is sometimes used informally to honor Cuban-trained masters, but other countries rely on reputation and proven craftsmanship instead of a numbered certification.
