🔥 Fireside Friday: What Makes Someone Instantly Welcome in a Cigar Lounge?

A great cigar lounge is more than chairs, ci**rs, and smoke.

It’s the people.

Think back to your first time walking into a cigar lounge. Maybe you knew exactly what you wanted… or maybe you stood there pretending you did. 😄

So tonight’s question:

👉 What makes someone instantly welcome in a cigar lounge?

Is it:

🤝 A handshake?
💬 Someone starting a conversation?
🪑 Pulling up an empty chair?
💨 Offering advice without being pushy?
😄 A simple “What are you smoking today?”

Sometimes the smallest gestures make the biggest difference.

📝 Chet’s Note:
For me, it’s when someone treats you like you belong there before you've “earned” it. A cigar lounge should never feel like a private club where newcomers have to prove themselves. Some of the best conversations start with a simple, “Mind if I join you?” or “What are you smoking?”

💬 Let’s hear it — what makes someone feel instantly welcome?

🔥 Spotlight Thursday: Dead Low Brewing 🔥

For this Spotlight Thursday, we’re highlighting a local gem along the Ohio River — Dead Low Brewing.

Located at 5959 Kellogg Avenue, Dead Low Brewing opened in 2019 and quickly built a reputation as more than just a brewery. Their focus on quality food, craft beverages, and an inviting atmosphere has made them a favorite stop for Cincinnati locals looking to relax and unwind.

Nestled near the Ohio River, Dead Low blends a laid-back feel with a menu that goes well beyond typical brewery fare. Whether you're stopping in for a meal, drinks with friends, or enjoying the outdoor setting, there’s a lot to appreciate.

✨ What makes Dead Low stand out:
• Local Cincinnati brewery and restaurant
• Great outdoor seating and relaxed atmosphere
• Elevated pub fare and creative menu options
• Craft beer brewed in-house
• Beautiful location near the Ohio River

💬 Chet’s Note:
One of the things I appreciate about places like Dead Low is that they create an atmosphere where people can slow down, relax, and enjoy the company around them. Those are the same kinds of experiences we love creating at Leaf to Ash Cigar Lounge.

📏 Distance from Leaf to Ash Cigar Lounge:
Only about 6 miles away.

📍 Enjoy dinner and drinks at Dead Low, then head over to Leaf to Ash Cigar Lounge and finish the evening with a great cigar.

🔥 Leaf to Ash Staff Select – Greg’s Picks 🔥

This week Greg takes over the Leaf to Ash Staff Select, and this one is all about exploring just how much variation can exist while using very similar building blocks.

Greg’s theme:

“Three ci**rs from the same manufacturer using a Cameroon wrapper with Dominican binder and filler. I wanted to highlight how different a cigar can be while being so similar in construction and leaf selection. I generally find a smaller ring gauge makes it easier to catch tasting notes.”

💨 This week’s lineup:

• Arturo Fuente Hemingway Best Seller Natural (4.5 x 43/55)
• Arturo Fuente Don Carlos No. 4 (5 x 43)
• Arturo Fuente Casa Cuba – Doble Cinco (5 x 50)

📝 Why these?

The Hemingway Best Seller starts things off with notes of cedar, toasted nuts, and white pepper. Greg likes this one as an early morning or evening smoke—shorter, approachable, and not overpowering.

The Don Carlos No. 4 was blended by Carlos Fuente Sr. for his own personal use and delivers sweet leather and chocolate notes. Greg especially enjoys the pre-light aroma with its mild sweetness and nutty character.

The Casa Cuba Doble Cinco represents the final blend created by Carlos Fuente Sr. with sweet, woody notes and a touch of citrus. Greg enjoys the leather and cedar aromas before lighting.

Same manufacturer. Same wrapper origin. Same binder and filler origin.

Different stories. Different experiences.

🔥 Leaf to Ash Staff Select – Greg’s Picks 🔥

Next week Greg takes over the Leaf to Ash Staff Select, and this one is built around a simple question:

👀 How different can ci**rs really be when they share so much in common?

Here’s your hint:

• Three ci**rs from the same manufacturer
• Same Cameroon wrapper
• Same Dominican binder and filler
• Different personalities and tasting experiences

Expect notes including:

🌲 Cedar
🌰 Toasted nuts
🍫 Chocolate
🍋 Citrus
🌶 Pepper

Greg’s thought behind this one:

"I wanted to highlight how different a cigar can be while being so similar in construction and leaf selection. I also generally find smaller ring gauges make it easier to catch the tasting notes."

Same ingredients. Different stories.

🌟 Tasting Note Tuesday: Tatuaje – Havana VI Verocu Blue No. 2 (5.5 x 54) 🌟

This week we're featuring a cigar that takes a familiar favorite and turns up the intensity: Tatuaje Havana VI Verocu Blue No. 2.

Originally introduced as a stronger expression of the Havana VI series, Verocu was created by Pete Johnson and produced by the Garcia family at My Father Ci**rs. While it shares the Havana VI roots, the Verocu line pushes into fuller-bodied territory with richer flavors and a more assertive profile.

Blend Highlights:
• Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo '99
• Binder & Filler: Nicaraguan
• Vitola: No. 2 (5.5 x 54)
• Profile: Medium-Full to Full

Flavor Journey:
🔥 First Third: Black pepper, cedar, and earthy richness arrive immediately.
🔥 Middle: Cocoa, roasted nuts, and leather begin layering in with subtle sweetness.
🔥 Final Third: Espresso, dark earth, and warm spice build into a bold, satisfying finish.

Why It Stands Out:
• Stronger, richer interpretation of the Havana VI line
• Classic Tatuaje earth and spice with added depth
• Excellent balance despite the added body

Perfect Pairings:
🥃 Rye whiskey or barrel-proof bourbon
☕ Espresso or dark roast coffee
🍺 Porter or stout

If you enjoy classic Tatuaje character but want a little more horsepower under the hood, Verocu Blue No. 2 delivers.

Available at Leaf to Ash Cigar Lounge.

🔥 Cigar Lesson Monday 🔥

🌿 From Bottom Leaf to Top Leaf – Week 1 🌿

Volado – The Combustion Engine of the Cigar 💨

Last week we kicked off our new series exploring the different levels of to***co leaves on the plant and the role each one plays. Today, we start at the bottom.

📍 Volado leaves grow at the lowest part of the to***co plant.

Because they receive less direct sunlight, Volado leaves are generally:

🌱 Thin in structure
🌱 Lower in oils
🌱 Mild in flavor and strength

So why use them at all?

🔥 Their superpower is combustion.

Volado is often responsible for helping your cigar:

✔️ Burn evenly
✔️ Maintain good airflow
✔️ Stay lit throughout the smoking experience

Volado may not get the spotlight that Ligero often receives, but without it, even the richest blend could struggle to perform properly.

Think of it this way: if Ligero is the star quarterback, Volado is the offensive line—rarely noticed until it isn’t doing its job.

💨 Every leaf in a cigar has a purpose, and this one helps keep the entire experience moving forward.

Next Week: Seco – The Flavor Carrier 🌿

🔥 Fireside Friday: Have You Ever Regretted Smoking a Cigar?

Not every cigar story ends with, “That was amazing.” 😄

👉 Have you ever regretted smoking a cigar?

Maybe you were:

🕒 Too young and had no clue what you were doing
🎉 Saving it for the wrong occasion
😬 Smoked it too fast
💨 Smoked on an empty stomach
📦 Accidentally smoked the last one from a blend you loved
🥃 Paired it with something that just didn't work

We've all had those moments where we sat back afterward and thought...

"Well... that wasn't my best decision."

📝 Chet’s Note:
Mine is easy. At 19 years old, I bought my first cigar, felt incredibly confident... and then inhaled it. I coughed so hard I was convinced I had just discovered a brand-new form of self-inflicted punishment. I walked away thinking ci**rs were absolutely disgusting. Thankfully, years later I learned I was the problem—not the cigar. 😄

💬 Let's hear your story. What cigar (or situation) made you think, “Yeah... I wish I could have that one back.”
