Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve
Based in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, the heart of Pinot Noir country in Champagne’s Montagne de Reims, the Vesselles have been growing wine grapes for over 300 years. Owners, Delphine and David Vesselle, a husband-and-wife team harvest by hand and use indigenous yeasts, and make only around 6,000 cases per year. They are a small family grower, truly delivering superb quality and value.

Varietals: 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, the Brut Réserve is big, bold and Pinot-driven. Dosage: 11 g/l making it full bodied. Aromas: honeycrisp apple, with notes of orange peel, apricot and toffee. On the palate the apple shines through with touch of minerality

These are four beautuful and elegant champagnes I will taste over the next few days. They are all made in Champagne but don't share the same characterisitics. There are two attribute they do share...... they are all individual family growers and each bottle is under under $60. Stay tuned for tomorrow's critique on Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Grand Cru.

Legend has it that the Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon discovered the Champagne method for making sparkling wines more than 300 years ago. As it happens, a paper presented to the Royal Society in London described the Champagne production method in 1662, six years before Pérignon ever set foot in a monastery.
