SELECT SIX FOR MAY/JUNE 2026
2024 SOUTHWEST MOUNTAIN VINEYARD VIOGNIER, MONTICELLO, VIRGINIA.
One of the newer wineries in the area, Southwest Mountain Vineyards springs forth from the centuries old Castalia Farm right at the intersection of Rt 22/231, Or Louisa Road and Gordonsville Road if you're better with names than numbers.
While the vines are still young the quality early on shows great promise, and even this youthful Viognier shows not just fine quality but strong value. Purpously lighter, unoaked and crisper in style to show of the fresh floral notes without as much weighty and tropical fruit, this makes for an ideal warm weather treat as a bit of extra chill brings lots of snap to the peach and pear tones.
Plenty of natural body but nothing cloying to the texture at all, this is one to have on hand all Summer long.
Regular Price $20.99/btl, $17.84/case
2022 PETRAIO PRIMITIVO PUGLIA
Zinfandel is a favorite for many to do with cookouts in the warmer months, and a popular go-to if folks may be having some form of American BBQ.
It may be heresy to some, but may we suggest that the O.G. Zinfandel, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, is a BETTER choice? The Italian style tends to be less jammy and not as prone to extreme alcohol levels, which can get into conflict with your more spicy or twangy BBQ recipes.
Still juicy with lots of warm black fruits and peppery spices, you don't battle extra sweetness or boozy heat, just complimentary flavors that match the foods. Bring on your vinegar base, ketchup base, spicy rubs (very similar to Calabrian rubs so close to Puglia), your meat of choice, or just a simple quick burger off the grill. This will make you and the food very happy.
Regular Price $14.99/btl, $12.74/case
2025 FAMILIE DURAND SAUVIGNON BLANC VAL DE LOIRE
You can never have too many choices when it comes to choosing a value Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire. There are many different ways they can be good and still fairly different from each other, some play up more fruit, others can be more racy, and so many tasty combinations of the two.
A new producer to us, the Durand family is based in the Sancerre and Menetou-Salon end of the Loi with their estate vineyards, but to develop their more budget friendly wines are working with a grower that follows similar levels of organic farming as they do for their own vines.
This wine lands firmly at the 'racy/energetic' end of the spectrum, extremely crystalline and fresh aromatic and seemingly light at first but the expressive fresh acidity on the palate gives the bright fruit lots of length and expression. Perfect right out of the fridge for Summer sipping.
Regular Price $16.99/btl, $14.44/case
2022 ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS MALBEC MENDOZA 'CLASSICO'
(Wine Advocate 90points)
Malbec in Argentina has gone through much of the same syndrome that Syrah/Shiraz did in Australia, where one certain style became THE style associated with the entire varietal, which you either liked or disliked them for.
There is now a LOT more nuance to Malbec than ever before, as evidenced by this producer's entry level wine. Straightforward without any obvious oak aromas, the aromas are fresh and brightly red fruited with some cassis and dark spice underneath.
Often Malbec in this price range is jammy and one-note in flavor, but the complexity here is nuanced and juicy with nice savory herbs coming through. With fruit coming to this bottling from the prestigious Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley, the natural depth of flavor shines through without anything extra to 'enhance' it, making for some stellar drinking at this price.
Regular Price $14.99/btl, $12.74/case
2024 DILA-O RKATSITELI/MTSVANE AMBER WINE GEORGIA
With the modern growth in interest for more natural and traditional forms of winemaking, the popularity of skin contact white wines is booming, especially for one of the original (if not THE original) forms from the country of Georgia.
Historically these wines were aged in large buried clay vessels called qvevri on the skins for a month or more, which would give the wine some extra tannins for stabilization as well as a distinctive orange or amber tone, depending on how long the process lasted and the grapes used.
Rkatsiteli is perhaps the most famous of their native varieties, and its naturally thick skinned grapes are perfect for the process.
Deep dried white fruits, candied orange skins and white figs on the nose with some musky tones, also very fleshy flavors on the palate with lots of discernable tannin texture that give the fruits a long lasting finish.
An ancient style of wine that does remarkably well with plenty of modern dishes from around the world.
Regular Price $18.99/btl, $16.14/case
2024 LE CHARMEL PINOT NOIR VDP d'OC
This is everything you can ask for from a French Pinot Noir, without the added expense of it coming from Burgundy. While there are literally oceans of Pinot from the large expanse of the Languedoc that tastes very flat and plain, cooler sources tucked in closer to the interior mountains can deliver some very sound alternatives.
Classic black cherry skin and light red fruit aromas on the nose with a hint of oak toast, polished and silky/savory on the palate with very fine tannins and a nice plumpness that doesn't come from adding in other varieties.
This is light and smooth but not thin and flavorless, distinctly French in style and perfect for pairing with all manner of lighter dishes.
