Malvasia Pinot Grigio from Vignai da Duline

In the heart of the Friuli region of northern Italy is Vignai da Duline, a small, family-owned winery. It’s here that winemaker Lorenzo Mocchiutti and his wife, Federica, produce wines that harness the complexity and varied terroir of the region. In an area known for its white wines, the Malvasia and Pinot Grigio from Vignai da Duline stand alone. Crisp and inviting with well-balanced acidity, you’ll find notes of stone fruit with a slight minerality and effervescence.

Weekend Wine Tasting
All Day Saturday and Sunday

little south of Florence and east of Siena sits Civitella in Val di Chiana. Here Filippo Volpi makes IlBioSelvatico. One man focused on a plot of earth making one wine, Filippo is a true food and wine guy. He makes his wine by picking fruit over weeks instead of hours. It reminds me of a chef selecting different components for a dish. The fermentation method is a strong nod to Burgundy (a great love of Filippo's). He has worked in many wonderful restaurants in both Italy and France, is a sommelier, and possesses a wealth of knowledge on wines of his region and beyond.
This week we aren't going to host a long line of wines. Instead, we are going to highlight one from one man. I hope we can do it justice and I hope you have the time to stop by.

This weekend, we are showing wines from Chateau Montdomaine. The white and rose sparkling are favorite around the shop.
The winery itself has been around since 1508. But with the winey now falling to Frédéric Plou and his wife Louisa they have focused on making high-quality wines while also taking care to work with little to no intervention. The wines are clean and wonder come by and see for yourself.

Even weekend, we host a tasting all day Saturday and Sunday

This wee we are showcasing two great little everyday wine from Les Vignerons d'Estezargues of the
Rhône Valley. This little group of growers have allied together to create some wonderful wines with minimal intervention. Stop by and check them out.

Saturday 11to 10
Sunday 12 to 6

Here is a little bit about the project:

The history behind Les Vignerons d’Estézargues dates to 1965, when winemakers near the small town of Estézargues in southern Rhône near Avignon joined forces to form a cooperative. In 1989, one of the pioneers of natural wine, Jean-François Nicq took over the management and convinced the cooperative with ten different farmers to focus more on quality.

From 1995 they began to vinify the grape must from their best vineyards individually, and since 1998 they have worked without cultured yeast, enzymes, fining or filtration, and only with an absolute minimal addition of sulphur. Changing managements have continued in these tracks, and Les Vignerons d’Estézargues today stands as a shining example of one of France’s most well-run cooperatives.

The origins of the Joyeux family at Ornaisons in Corbières can be traced back to the 17th century. Fearlessly braving the risks and the difficulties faced by the viticultural community following the phylloxera epidemic, the family acquired what would one day become ‘Domaine La Cendrillon’.

The vineyards were passed down generation to generation, multiple of which were female led, throughout the 19th century. In the late 90’s, the current generation, Robert and Genevieve, began to shift the approach of the winery. They maintained their long lineage of winemaking traditions while also striving to place a strong importance on their natural environment. In the early 2000s, the estate was certified fully organic, and they reduced the surface under vines to concentrate on the best terroirs. Herbicides were banished and replaced by hoeing between the vines. Organic matter in the soil incorporates shredded vine prunings, and encourages microbial activity and moisture retention through the planting of inter-row cover crops that act as green manure.

The estate is very forward thinking, close to the earth, and the focus shifted to varieties that could withstand climate change. Corbieres is inherently a very hot region. It is rare to see Albarino grown in France, even close to the border.  In 2017, one of their sons, Hubert, left Paris to carry on the family tradition and devote himself full time to the estate, furthering the domain's dedication to healthy, happy vines (practicing biodynamic, BIO certified) and focusing on minimum intervention in the cellar.

The wines meld a creative and traditional approach for their region, and the profiles are unique and thoughtful while remaining highly drinkable.
