Should the people making the rules live by the same rules?

Brian Keenan never achieved the public profile of Gerry Adams or Martin McGuinness, but within the Provisional IRA he became one of its most influential figures.

A Belfast republican associated with Marxist politics, Keenan developed a reputation as a military hardliner. He became particularly associated with the IRA’s military strategy, weapons procurement and attempts to secure arms from overseas.

After being arrested in England in 1979, Keenan was convicted of conspiracy offences connected to IRA activity and spent years in prison. Following his release in 1993, he returned to republican politics and later served on the IRA Army Council.

Keenan was also associated with the IRA’s international arms networks, including its relationship with Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya, which supplied the organisation with substantial quantities of weapons and explosives during the 1980s.

Perhaps most interestingly, despite his reputation as a hardliner, Keenan ultimately backed the republican leadership’s peace strategy and the IRA’s decision to end its armed campaign.

How important do you think figures like Keenan were in bringing the conflict to an end?
