When We Ruled The Roost
I remember a time back round ‘93
We were all just kids, my buddies and me
We worked at this old hole just outside of town.
Even if we were off, that’s where we’d be found.
At night when that big orange ball shined o’er that truck stop roof.
Chorus
We were all just kids right out of high school. Getting to hang out with stars we thought we were cool. We smoked a little smoke and times all Hell would break loose. Just a bunch of crazy kids, when we ruled The Roost.
We met NASCAR drivers, musicians country and rock
And if we were lucky they’d come in and talk.
Marty Stuart called my Mama from the pay phone one night
I sit with Ronnie McDowell and watched two waitresses fight.
The party welcome wagon was the bunch of us.
Hell, we even swiped a pumpkin on Halloween for Wynonna Judd’s tour bus.
Chorus
We were all just kids right out of high school. Getting to hang out with stars we thought we were cool. We smoked a little smoke and times all Hell would break loose. Just a bunch of crazy kids, when we ruled The Roost.
Mel McDaniel was a regular he’d even call ahead, and we’d come back to party even if we were home in bed.
Garth Brooks put on a mini concert from his bus door one night, and The Intimidator’s hauler was a hell of a sight.
David Allen Coe wasn’t happy when he lost big and Merv’s boat. I said I guess he’s blowing the money from “The greatest country song ever wrote”
Chorus
We were all just kids right out of high school. Getting to hang out with stars we thought we were cool. We smoked a little smoke and times all Hell would break loose. Just a bunch of crazy kids, when we ruled The Roost.
The old Roost is gone now, we cried when they tore it down.
We’ve lost a lot of those old friends and some moved on and settled down.
Truckers to this day still park on our old stomping grounds.
That 76 Truck Plaza on the outskirts of town.
I miss those guys a little more every day, and if that old lot could talk, I’ll bet it would say.
(Chorus amended)
They were all just kids right out of high school. Getting to hang out with stars they thought they were cool. They smoked a little smoke and times all Hell would break loose. I miss those simpler times back when they ruled the roost.
