Recent vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are priced between $800-$1000, but we can enjoy their foray into South America for a far more approachable price. Opus One, Mouton’s Napa winery, now goes for north of $400 a bottle. Chile’s “grand cru,” if you will, Almaviva is beautifully showy and complex along with being slightly easier to put on the dinner table.

Chile’s Elqui Valley is a relative new wine region, though it’s long famous for its Pisco production. The wine industry there began in the 1990s and this winery was launched in 2012. The Elqui Valley has less than 300 hectares of vineyards so it’s just gaining a measure of fame. This Danish fellow is helping put the region on the map.

We might suggest the name “Cru” is appropriate for this remarkably delicious Southern Hemisphere rendition of a Premier Cru or Grand Cru White Burgundy. This wine is very showy and it’s well-priced given its superlative quality. There are some Master Sommeliers now producing wine and we wonder, given that these people have tasted the BEST Chardonnays in the world, why they don’t produce exceptional wines.
Steve Smith is a Master of Wine and this fellow is deserving of that lofty title. Just taste his stellar Smith and Sheth Chardonnay.

The Jura region in the French Alps has become popular in the last decade, or so. Some domaine’s wines are so highly sought-after that the bottles cost $100-$250+! Pair this with almond-crusted chicken or fish. Comté or Gruyere cheeses are other good matches with Savagnin. Monsieur Bouillet’s wine is a great introduction to the wines from the Jura.

Italy’s Veneto is famous for Soave, Bardolino, Valpolicella and Prosecco, but there are many hidden treasures to be found there. Only about 14 wineries make a sweet wine called Torcolato, with the Maculan family accounting for roughly half the production! We understand there are but 100 hectares of the Vespaiolo grape. The sweet juice takes months to ferment and the resulting wine, if you can find it, may be cellared for a decade or two. And we have some! There are also bottles of their delightful Dindarello ($19.99—375ml). The sublime Torcolato is hard to resist in its youth, though.

The appassimento of the hand-harvested grapes for the Veneto’s Amarone wine typically takes three to four months in a loft called a fruttaio. The berries then lose roughly 30% of their weight, concentrating the sugar level of the grapes along with the acidity and, of course, the flavor. We appreciate the elegance of this wine and, as Amarone wines go, it’s reasonably priced.

If you’d like a good introduction to Nebbiolo and the wines of Piemonte’s Langhe region, the Cordero di Montezemolo 2022 is just the ticket. We like the ripe, somewhat plummy character of this vintage and its affordable price makes it even better!

A French woman came in last week asking if we had any Orange Wines. We are not enamored with most of them, often finding them to be some sort of swamp water. There are but a handful in the shop and all are well-made and appealing to naturalistas and wine aficionados. She looked horrified when we showed her Domaine Weinbach’s 2022 “MVO”, as the expert told us she’s from near Alsace and “they don’t make good Orange wine there.”
We shared a bottle of this with friends at a dim sum dinner the other evening and they were delighted to discover such a brilliant wine.

The Titus Brothers’ new Cabernet Franc is delicious, coming from their estate vineyard in St. Helena and a cooler site just east of Napa’s Carneros region.
With a smattering of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, it’s a full-bodied, showy Napa red.
And you can enjoy it tonight!

The term pétillant indicates there’s a gentle sparkling character to this classic, bargain-priced Portuguese Vinho Verde. A fellow brought a bottle of this back, claiming there was something wrong with it. It was delightful, but he was complaining because the wine was lightly fizzy.
“Sir, it’s a classic Vinho Verde.” Yes, but it’s fizzy!
“Sir, it’s a classic Vinho Verde.”
Well then you should post a sign explaining that.
And, in fact, the sign on that display has been there for years, but one has to read it to get a clue.

We’ve been told that the Sagrantino grape can have twice the tannin level of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo wines! You’ll find most Sagrantino is planted in Umbria with just several dozen vintners making it there. Arnaldo Caprai is an elite producer in Italy’s pantheon of wineries with a very showy reserve level bottling. Pair this bad boy with a steak or lamb and give it an hour in a decanter.
