We love our visits to LFP every year! The Moueix family’s history in Pomerol is the stuff of legend. It all began in 1950, when Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired La Fleur-Pétrus. Nestled gracefully on the elevated plateau of Pomerol, it is aptly named for its location between Pétrus and Lafleur. The Moueix stewardship of both this estate and Pétrus (beginning in 1961) marked the beginning of a transformative era in Pomerol. La Fleur-Pétrus is among the region’s elite terroirs, richly layered gravel and deep clay soils on the famed plateau, offering aristocratic depth without the overwhelming price tag of its neighbors.

In 1785, Piper-Heidsieck presented an exclusive cuvée to Queen Marie Antoinette of France. The bottle was designed by jeweler Pierre-Karl Fabergé, famous for his intricate jeweled eggs. Since 1976, only 14 vintages of Rare Millésime have been released, and the bottle is still adorned with nods to the original design. And much like Salon and Delamotte, 2013 also marks the first vintage as a standalone brand, separate from its Piper-Heidsieck origins. This is a gorgeous, finessed Champagne with a deft balance of saltiness and savoriness. Troplong Mondot continues its string of great vintages. It’s been described as “breathtaking” and “focused” and remains one of the must-buy wines from the Right Bank.

Perhaps the best surprise of the day is Vieux Chateau Certan and its unprecedented 33% price reduction versus last year’s release. It is already among the most undervalued great wines in the world, and this is a rare chance to buy VCC at a discount. Antonio Galloni describes it as “nothing short of breathtaking.”

Castello di Ama is one of our favorite estates in Tuscany, just 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole. The site is spectacular, set on a rounded hilltop 1600 feet above sea level. This Chianti Classico is Sanviogese from four of the estate’s vineyards. This is fresh and delicate, with fresh red fruit, sour cherry, a hint of spice, and floral notes on the nose. Chateau Haut-Bailly is among our favorite estates in Bordeaux. This prestigious estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation dates back to the 15th century and today boasts some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the region. Under the leadership of the Wilmers family and Managing Director Veronique Sanders, Haut-Bailly has earned a reputation for producing some of the most elegant and precise wines in Bordeaux.

Haut-Bailly’s wines are among the best of the appellation, ranking with Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion year after year. The 2020 vintage is one of the greatest recent examples, earning a near-perfect rating from multiple critics. Veronique calls it a “diabolical beauty.” It is “Classy and polished to the core,” according to Neal Martin – and “just about pure perfection” in the opinion of Jeb Dunnuck.
